High latency with GM MIDI

Hi again,

I'm trying to play GM midi with a midi controller keyboard. There is a bothersome high-ish latency that I can't get rid of: no matter which latency setting I choose with the kX ASIO setup, the latency I get never changes... I can try 2.66 or 170 ms, it stays exactly the same. Is there a different place to set the GM MIDI latency?

I'm not advanced user-just starting so maybe my words are not too helpfull

Did you read FAQs?
Maybe any software is running in the background like cooling processor or something like that.
Or something similar which is the resource hog.
After changing latency try to restart the application-it helps me with my checks.
You didn't say which OS-but if XP maybe you have ACPI working?

Cheers!

Hi, thanks for your answers, I'm using windows XP, and I always close the applications other than what I'm doing. What is ACPI? I'm using cubase. So I changed the latency several times using the VST multitrack ASIO control panel, but observed no changed whatsoever. Should I set the latency first in the kX ASIO settings, and then start cubase?

What VSTi instrument (or is it KXSynth?) are you trying to control with your midi keyboard? Is your MIDI interface USB or are you using the joystick connector in the card itself as MIDI connector?

Well, it's not a VST instrument, just GM midi through Microsoft's software synth in cubase. I have different options, kx control, kxuart, microsoft's software synth, and kx synth and kxsynth2. None of the kxsynth give me a sound. I can see the green bar moving up and down when I hit a key, but no sound comes out, except with MS software synth. I use a fatar SL161 keyboard connected through the joystick connector of the sb live.

Hi!

I heard about the big latency of M$-Synth, so you shouldn´t use it for time-critical operations. The kxsynths only can give any sound, if you load a soundfont into the soundfond window of kx (right click the tray icon -> soundfonts...) and if you turn up the synth-faders in the kx-mixer. The kxSynth-latency is near zero!

Cheers!

Hi all,
As I said in another thread, I'm switching to Reason. The difference with cubase is like night and day: Reason works absolutely flawlessly for me, no cracks, good latency, good sounds, and it's super easy to use, so... Back to the store for cubase!

Thanks for all your help guys!

the latency is in no way releated to kx asio. you are using microsoft synth as output and it will ALWAYS be late. you should use your soundcard's inner chip(loading appropriate sf2 files) or use a software sampler like kontakt or halion or any other vst. that is not cubase's fault also.. it plays through your selected output and that output is not designed for realtime playing.

and reason is in no way releated to gm midi. but it uses its own sampler for triggering sounds. as i said, you should load soundfonts to your soudcard and select output as "kx synth" or use a sampler..

Any other VST has latency problems also (except maybe virtual guitarist, which I think would be sort of a sampler). Plus, if I try to record, say, drums from a VST instruments, everything goes to pot. I don't know what the problem is, maybe my PC is not fast enough to run cubase, but from the posts I've seen, I doubt it's an issue. And reason has its own synths also, and they work a lot better than the VST synths in cubase, so reason works better even when not using samplers...

There's something wrong with your isntallation. You should ba able to use KX ASIO with 10ms or less. Did you remove all Craeative crap before installing? Try downloading latest version and re-installing again.

I'm not sure. How can I check that all the creative crap is gone? Wouldn't it affect reason as well?

What version of Cubase are you using? Your problems are not happening to other people. That makes me htink the problems is somewhere else than in KX drivers...

if you are using reason with 10ms latency, then you can have the same latency with cubase EXCEPT Ms wavetablesynth. yeah virtual guitarist is kinda sampler. any other samplers will work the same way too.
