24 bit recording is possible!
24bit recording
first: 24 bit recording with audigy platinum ex [kxdrv ... 3534 - 35] is possible! Indeed! - but only in Wavelab [vs 4.01a and earlier]. I tried a record with 48 Khz / 24 Bit [AC97, line in or Micro]. It works! [I've analyzed the file, it's true!] Strangely it doesnt work in Logic Audio. It appears that Message: [Please note that the current ASIO driver or hardware does not provide 20 or 24 bit data. It does not make sense to rec. into 24 bit audiofiles]. No chance. I am a little confused about this. Why does it work in Wavelab but not in Logic? And why did it work in Wavelab on earlier versions of KX Drivers too? [...3529] ------------------------- second: Did anybody find a working way to prevent clicks and pops at Latency 5.33 .... 10.66 ms? Disabling ACPI could make sense if you have problems with shared IRQs [other PCI or AGP]- but that I haven't!. All WinXP effects are disabled. To change PCI Latencies seem not to be necessary on WinXP. What else...? |

You are probably not truly recording in 24 bit. You're writing a 24bit file (even a sb16 will do that), but it's quality is actually 16bit because of the converters which are being used in your card.

wavelab lies...
Really, this could be the reason why it seems to be a 24bit recording. In fact, it doesn't sound better than recording with 16bit. Usually you can hear the difference immediatly.
Okay, so let's hope that 24 bit recording will be possible in the future. Good luck with the driver Experiment at vs. 3535! Any Ideas about pops and clicks at 5-10ms latency? Great Forum here- thank you! |

Eugene posted that he'll probably implement 24bit recording through ASIO but it may take a while for that... The latest drivers are not 3535, but 3536 final. To get rid of those pops you need to optimize your machine for audio. Search the net about that. With an Athlon 2.4 I can use 32 stereo tracks with tons of effects at 10ms, and can play most vsti's at 2 or 5ms without pops/clicks. There's a document from Tascam about optimizing your computer for audio recording... I don't know where you can find it, but I may have it here somewhere. I could send that to you if you want.

You have to optimise windows xp for background services in the system control panel, as ASIO runs as a background task
