kX Synth output routed to ASIO...

Dear all,

Is it possible to route the audio output from the kX Synth(s) to any of the ASIO inputs? So far, I've only managed to get the audio from the FXBus sends (and they only work if you're using FX ) to the ASIO inputs, but I can't seem to find the kX Synth outputs (if any exist) within the DSP to get the "dry" signal.

Any hints or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Dan

Yes, connect a virtual cable from the FXBUS second and third outputs (they output kxsynth) to any ASIO input (on EPILOG) and you're done!

Once again Daniel, thanks for your help! I was confused with one of the outputs not working, until I realised that you meant FXBus2 and 3 as they are labelled, rather than my first assumption of the second and third outputs on shown the FXBus (which are actually FxBus1 and 2) - it's that good old "let's start from zero and confuse everyone" thing again

Now, if only there was a way of being able to route each MIDI channel output to an ASIO input...

Actually you can indeed route each individual kx synth channel to a different ASIO input. FXBUS comes "pre-programmed" by kx, but you can change what goes out in each one of the FXBUSses outputs. You need to use KX ROUTER for that. Open it, go to Synth 1 (or Synth 2, whichever you are using) and choose what midi channel will be routed to each specific FXBUS. You can use some of the unused FXBUS for that or replace some of the used ones. Then all you need is to connect a virtual cable from the FXBUS you assigned to, let's say, midi channel 10, to a available asio input (in EPILOG). You can even add individual effects for each midi channel this way. Isn't that nice?

It's not just nice...it's fantastic! I'll be trying this out shortly. Thanks Daniel!

I've tested it out, and it works well, I never imagined that it would be this easy to create multitrack recordings of MIDI sequences!

Another scenario has arisen though - a friend of mine (we are working on a music project together) has just received a new audio interface (RME Hammerfall HDSP), but has an Audigy as well. We'd like to be able to use the Audigy as a sound module, so is it possible to send the kX Synth outputs to the ASIO inputs on the other audio interface by any means?

I suppose it could be done by routing 6 channels to each of the analogue outputs on the card, and then back into the audio interface, but they would only be mono.

It's a pity that there isn't some way to change the input jacks on the Audigy to outputs, that would have been the easiest method

I envisage that someone must have had a look into making some kind of virtual patch bay for routing ASIO between devices, but I've not had a chance to look for any yet, and it might defeat the object if it requires a large amount of processing power...

System Specs

the jacks are hardwire - but if the Hammerfall card has S/PDIF inputs you can use them
just us the SPDIF outs on the AUD_EXT header… there should be 3 or 4 (that means 8 mono outputs) it depends on how many S/PDIF ins the hammerfall card has

as for the routing program… i think bidule does that (don't quote me on that however)

Thanks for the reply dj_stick...I'll have to check to see what the RME card can handle.

Strangely enough, I found another thread to which you contributed, and you mentioned http://www.electricstart.de/ - which is a very interesting site! I suppose if the digital inputs of the RME are limited (without buying the digital audio interface for it), then we could look into making some D/A converters for it.

Why would you want to do that in the first place? For easy of use, yes you could interconnect both cards digitally, but you wouldn't gain anything in recording quality. It'd be the same as recording directly from the audigy into an asio host. You can create pseudo 24bit 96khz files from that, for compatibility with the RME.

I suppose it would be useful if I explained the application of what we're trying to do!

What we're doing is creating music on the fly, using Drum beats, chords and melodies from melodic instruments as a base. Whilst that is happening we're improvising over the top, and seeing as effects are to be used in "real time", software monitoring has to be employed - hence the need to get the RME.

I hope that makes sense! The Audigy will work really well as a sound module, it's just that we couldn't use the card with a latency of less than 21.33ms (all we got below that were clicks and pops), which was quite difficult to monitor with. So if we dedicate the Audigy to being a sound module, and then bring everything together via the RME card there shouldn't be any noticeable latency in our "live" scenario.

Hi Dan!

Why don´t you (or your friend) ask before you buy another system? Monitoring also works with Audigy - not software- but hardwarebased. You can route your recording signal that is passing the DSP also to a different output pair (there are just enough of them ) and so you can hear without latency what is going into the card. FX you can send also to a different ASIO-pair and then mix it together to the physical output. I work since more than a year in that way (okay, with 10ms, but that dosen´t matter), and no problems with many musicians that used my equipment so far.

Thanks for your reply TravelRec! The thing is, my friend had already received the RME system...I thought about it too late!

With relation to your effects, do you use effects in the kX DSP, or do you use VST plugins?

Too bad for your friend , but he will find his way also with the RME, for sure.
I use mainly for "voice-rounding" the hardware-FX of kX, so ReverbR from Max M. for reverberation and Stereo-Chorus for fattening. Sometimes I also use VSTplugs for some strange things and mainly for instrumentation. But kX is a way cooler - just turn knobs and hear the difference - and no CPU usage for that.
