Multiple cards with ASIO/CubaseSX

First off I'd like to thank everyone involved in the kX Project and these forums.

I've read the FAQs and LeMury's excellent Cubase SX guide for kX Project, but I'm still stuck trying to get multitrack recording (2 cards, 4 mono channels - more if possible!) working in Cubase SX with kX project drivers.

I've seen a few people here and on other forums claim to have multitrack recording working with kX project:

When I select the Control Panel under Cubase SXs VST Multitrack page, it requires me to choose between the two sound cards (CT4670 and CT4832):

I've routed my line ins to the ASIO Outs and as far as I can see have the VST Connections in Cubase configured correctly - but I can only manage to get one card working at a time (by switching between them in the VST Multitrack Control Panel)

Is there some way to route line in from one SBLive to the ASIO Out of another? Is there something else I'm missing?

I would prefer to record using WDM straight in to Cool Edit Pro 2.1, but the recordings seem to go out of sync rather badly - even more so than when I was using the standard XP WDM drivers with one SBLive card and a MonsterSound MX300.

If anyone has any suggestions for how to get around either problem, I'd appreciate it.

SX (and other asio hosts) can only addres one ASIO device at a time.
To get more analog inputs, just connect the SPDIF_OUT from the 'slave' card
to SPDIF_IN (or CD_digital_IN) on the 'master' card.

This is the way it's done and works perfect with kX which supports multiple cards.
Search this forum for details.

Thanks for your quick reply - I now have 4 synchronised tracks piping in to Cubase SX!

Is it possible to exceed 6 channels using just SB Live cards, or does one of them need to be Audigy? (two analog inputs and two/three digital inputs?) I'm sure I read (on another forum) about someone having 8 tracks using 4 live cards.... I can't see how to do that with only two digital inputs on the 'master' card. I can't find anything on this forum that relates to that many sound cards...

I have 3 cards tied together for 6 Mono inputs. It worked fine with Win 98SE and now I am using XP Pro which seems to be more stable.

There is some windows limitation on the number of audio devices that can be recognized. I had a link to a Microsoft page that explained it but I can't find it anymore.

I suspect that 3 physical cards is the limit but I can't really prove that for sure. If you are electronically inclined, you can build one of TravelRec's gizmos.

The other option is the thread that was mentioned earlier, dj_stick's little modification to get an extra stereo input out of an Audigy card.

I have one SBLive (CT4832) that has an AUD_EXT. It also has two "solder points" at the top of the card that are labelled as a digital CD input, but there are no pins soldered on to the solder points to attach wires to.

Does this mean that the digital CD input doesn't work, or is the same input as the second SPDIF on the AUD_EXT? Or do I just need to do a little soldering work to get 3 digital inputs on this card, giving a total of 8 analog inputs across four SBLive cards? (please say yes)

Someone else in a previous thread mentioned constructing a list of creative cards and what useful inputs/outputs they have and where pinouts are located.. Has anyone furthered this effort, at least partially? I would be glad to contribute with pictures and some configuration notes for CT4670 and CT4832 and any other cards I come across, if that's any help)

you *may* be able to solder
not sure if it's been deactivated or not
but if you get another card i'm sure at least one will have the CD_SPDIF (and therefore be capable of 3 SPDIF ins)

The other SBLive I have at the moment only has the short (12pin?) connector which I believe only has one digital input + the regular digital CD in at the top of the card.

It looks like I can source brand new SB Live Digital Entertainment OEM (SB0100) cards locally, which look promising in the Digital Input department.

Thanks to everyone for their help in the last 24 hours. I think I finally have this sussed.

How is your SPDIF cable hooked up right now between the 2 cards? I wonder if the CD_SPDIF In and the SPDIF In on the 12 pin connector are the same input...

I think that the database thing would be a good idea, someone needs to volunteer to collect the information...Jalad perhaps???

I have noticed that one CT4830 isn't necessarily the same as the next CT4830, so the cards would probably have to have a second piece of identifying information like a PCB board Rev number or something.

So did you just volunteer?

Doug, CD_SPDIF and the SPDIF_IO inputs are different

SPDIF_IO has been used by other Live! Value users to get a second digital input from a CD/DVD Drive
