9800 pro problems
i just recently bought a new BB ATI radeon 9800 pro and saw this pro>xt bios thing and decided i would give it a shot. flashing went fine and smooth, but my problem is that for some reason im getting quite alot lower fps on a couple games(ut2004 demo for one) with the xt bios than with the original bios. i was wondering if this is just a bug that cannot be fixed or if theres something i need to switch, turn off/on or anything.
atm my video card settings are: clock rates: 391.50/702.00(351.00) vpu recover: on fastwrites: on(ive tried with it off and noticed its faster with it on) agp speed: 4x(thats as far as i supports) AA/AF are both off vsync: off truform: off edit: and i forgot to mention im using omega 2.5.22 drivers Last edited by Deathryuu3; Mar 28, 2004 at 08:11 AM. |

Hi
hi
well if your card has 128MB ram and you falshed with one of the 128MB XT bios files then you actually did nothing for your card then maybe give it a slower PRO bios. since ALL 128MB ram XT bios files are MODED PRO bios. SO i suggest you reflash back to your original backup PRO bios. as it's maybe faster then the XT(PRO) bios you've used. if your card has 256MB ram then you may want to try an original XT bios and see what happens. one thing I have to add is - if you have 128 MB ram - DONT, I repeat DONT try to flash it with an original 256MB ram bios cause youll hang your card . if you want a faster bios for your BBA card you might want to try the PowerColor XT 128MB bios. that I've put into the collection of bios files. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/bios/ good luck. me972 |

would this Powercolor xt bios be any faster than the original pro bios? ill flash back to the original bios until i know whether or not the Powercolor bios will be any faster, because i dont want to take the chance that my card wont like the Powercolor bios(being as my card is BBA...)

Well I have a PowerColor 9800SE card and when I tried to find a good bios for it I used all of them.
I flashed it with the BBA and tehn GigaCube etc. and then I tried the XT powercolor and for each bios I used I ran sevral bench tests and ran the PC for a few days to see if it was stable. out of them all I found the PowerColor gave me the best bench results was very stable and could O/C like crazy. I can reach bench clock rats for short times of 470Mhz core and 820 MEM... even with the VGA silencer. as of now I'm running with stock XT clock rates and the card is running GREAT... only problem i found up to now was in the DX9 game FARCRY - I have to downclock the card to the original SE clock rates because of the the heat problems the extar 4 pips are causing.(maybe thats why it was release as an SE and not a pro) so you have nothing to worry about concering any of the bios files I've gathered on DH download page since I personaly tested each and every one of them.. good luck. me972 |

well ive tested out the powercolor xt 128mb bios on my BBA 9800 pro 128mb. flash went fine like usual, i didnt really notice any increase in fps compared to the BBAti xt bios but i did notice that i could overclock the core speed by another 20 mhz. so overall not a whole lot better performance compared to the BBA bios but i could overclock a little more than normally so it did help a little.
then again my card is only using the stock cooling(ordinary heatsink w/ fan on core, no ram heatsinks). maybe ill do some more benchmarking when i buy new cooling for the card. overall: Powercolor 128mb XT bios is indeed better than the other bioses, not incredibly better for Pro cards(ive only tested on a BBAti pro card) but the bios does let you overclock 20+(depending on your card or cooling im sure) more mhz on the core. |

and can now run bench's at 465Mhz on AIR cooling. make sure you add MEMORY heat sinks. very helpfull in keeping the memory cool. and in addition to any core cooling add a 80mm fan on top of your card so as to force cool air through the memory heat sinks. all in all this should give you a very stable card at XT speeds. for 24/7 use. if after a week al is well you can try running the card at higher speeds for normal use. the best test for a moded card that I found is to play FARCRY (retail not demo) at max graphics levels for about 3 hours. if it can hold that with no problems then your fine. brgds me972. p.s. always O/c your card by small increments - never push it to the max al at once or you'll burn your card. |
