Ubuntu 7.10 Freezes When Installing ATI Drivers

Hello Everyone,
I am installing the Linux ATI drivers on my ASUS motherboard. My motherboard specs are:
ASUS M2A-VM HDMI
Integrated Radeon XPress 1250
AMD 64 Athlon
1 GB RAM
320 GB HD
40x Pioneer DVD-R

Ubuntu Version:

Ubuntu 7.10 Fiesty
Linux 2.6.20-15-generic

ATI Driver Version: ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run

ATI Driver Installer 38.4MB 8.40.4 Aug. 13, 2007 Automated installer and Display Drivers for XFree86 4.3 and X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2

I have been successful in installing Ubuntu 7.10 using the aternate CD via the text mode. I can use the shell to navigate. I would like to take a look a the GUI, but it appears that the generic drivers in Ubuntu will not launch "startx". When I try to run the ATI driver while logged in as root I can launch in to the installation instructions. At about the 5th step of the installation process (Choosing Recommened or Expert mode) the whole installer freezes. Ubuntu stays active because if I start pressing all the keys on my keyboard (because I don't know what correct combination of keys can kill the process) I can get back to the command prompt.

I would appreciate any advice on this situation.

Thanks

Isn't Feisty 7.04? Especially if its 2.6.20, 7.10 is gutsy gibbon and I think the kernel is 2.6.22. You shouldn't actually need the ATI drivers, and in my case they are worse than the open source version. Did you try the desktop CD? Was there a reason you went with the alternate CD?
