I have a SoundBlaster card which is audio device #0. If I add a second sound card, it becomes audio device #1. Does anyone know how to swap the audio device IDs of the soundcards so that the second one installed becomes audio device #0? (Short of uninstalling both of them and reinstalling in reverse order.)

why do you need to change the order?

A friend has the problem that his soundblaster is seen as device #2. (Onboard audio was device 0, I guess, but he says that is disabled.) His Creative Diagnostics fail. He wants to know if there is a way to set the SB as device 0.

the order in which the pc references soundcards shouldn't affect Creative diagnostics - more likely the program itself is shot, but don't quote me on that

Yeah, maybe the Diagnostic applet is broken. But he says it was like that even right after the first install, but the soundcard works fine, so he ignored it. Maybe the Diagnostic expects the SB card is device 0? I'd think that the audio device ID is stored somewhere. I was just wondering if it could be changed (hacked :-).

it could be that the app requires device 0, but that's a flaw in creative's coding (one of many)
there should be nothing to worry about

Yeah, not much to worry about anyway. I'm getting the impression he's worried that other apps might stop working, and annoyed that he can't run the diagnostic. But what I wonder about is why his SB card installed as device #2 instead of #0? He says he has onboard sound disabled, but I'm suspicious that maybe that was an afterthought. So a cleansweep might fix it (if he wants to go to the trouble).
