Spdif signal not being recognized by imon vfd

I purchased a Silverstone Lascala 16M HTPC Case that came with an Imon VFD (USB) interface and remote control. The VFD is not showing the graphic equalizer mode at all. When i go into the VFD options there is an option to scan for input and output devices for audio. I have my output set correctly to "Realtek HD Audio" as i am using Azalia. When i scan for outputs under the Realtek HD Audio subheading i come up with nothing, however i scan for output under Digital input i show my line in, mic, etc. I am assuming that since i am using an onboard sound controller via optical spdif that the VFD will not detect the output. I contacted Ahanix about the Imon, however they tell me to crank up the volume, it should work. its cranked! im at a loss.

Gigabyte 81955X motherboard with onboard SPdif output (optical and orange rca)

Has anyone encountered this before, or does anyone know of a workaround to get the imon to register the signal? Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated.....
