X-Fi driver confusion
Hi,
I'm new to these forums but it looks like an awesome sourc of information so plz excuse my noobnes. I have the creative x-fi fatal1ty gamer edition or whatever and I have benn looking at the kxproject and the youp pax drivers as replacements for the ceative ones. The default ones seems so intrusive to the system so I'm wondering if any of those are more lightweight. All I really need installed are the drivers the mode switcher, the configuration to switch between 5.1 and headphones and the ability to control the volume with my remote. What do I need to install to get these functions? thx in advance. |

They are certanly not intrusive. Of course i unchecked all the garbage like midi samples, extra sounfont banks and stuff that i don't need. Panels for all 3 modes are actually very nice, responsive and friendly. Startup is also very clean and only running process is well known CTHELPER.exe.
Drivers + Creative Audio Console This combination can control everything except Equalizer. |

!Problem: I tried to install the minimalistic option and I got these erros during the install:
CTRegSur fails to register "C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\WMaWrite.ax" CTRegSur fails to register "C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\Transcode.scm" CTRegSur fails to register "C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\WmaTag.mft" What do I do now? |

umm, yeah, I figure I have about a snowballs chance in hell of getting a reply. But now that I do have sound, despite the install errors, I get that windows 'doink' or 'plong' or whatever sound that windows makes when an app has crashed or made an error, you know, general error or warning message sound, I get it all the time at irregualr intervals and it comes wheter I'm using the machine or it's stting idle. Furthermore no entries shows up in event viewer so I have no idea where the problem is. help grately appriciated.

Well, I recommend not installing anything new onto this corrupted installation. First make sure you have admin rights and didn't restrict any access to any system folder (may be the cause for your registry errors). Then uninstall everything you installed for your x-fi. Then use drivercleaner pro (link and further advice on this tool can be found on this forum)! Then still with admin rights install everything again. BTW: I would recommend using custom installation. It should be easy to understand which program does what task and so it should be easy for you to choose if you need it or not.

I have the x-Fi extreme card, and it is working alright. Just install the basic meaning drivers+audio console and + UPDATE with the new drivers from their website. You shouldn't have any problems.
