Z-5500 Sub Placement Q
Got some :ogitech Z-5500's, and as many of you may know, the sub is flippin' giant. I've got it on my desk right now, but it's taking up so much room! I'd like to move it elsewhere so I can fit a larger secondary screen on here.
However, does the placement of the sub matter in terms of the effect? 2 possible places I could put it are to my right, or under the desk on the floor (not ideal, would shake the floor). But I won't do it if it results in inferior sound. Thanks

PC speaker systems are designed that the sub is placed on the floor
i did that with my GF's system, from the desk to the floor, and the sound quality when sitting infront of the monitor improved immensely

Placement of the Logitech sub has basically 2 things going for it.
1. Directional sound. The crossover is high enough on the Z--5500 speakers that some directional sound comes from the subwoofer. Therefore, the best effect for this will be to place the sub directly in front of you, midway between the front to satellites. Behind you works as well. 2. Corner loading for more SPL. Each surface (floor, wall, corner, usually in that order) you add beside the sub increases apparent volume. This also tends to increase sub boominess, and different people have different tastes for how they want their bass to sound. To incorporate both of these, a corner desk is perfect. Otherwise, it depends on what you're willing to sacrifice. If I were you, I'd try it in both places you're thinking of, to see which one sounds better. Myself, my sub (different speaker set, but similar sub in power output) is sitting directly in front of me under my corner desk. This is great for sound quality, but if I turn the volume up much, my monitor starts getting affected. For smaller CRTs or LCDs, this wouldn't be a problem, but you don't want your sub to affect hard drives and such either.
