Laptops and Audio

Hi

I now move around a lot so i thought its time to ditch the tower base monster for something smaller like a notebook.

The problem is, i love to make music and laptops don't have the conventional PCI slot for a nice sound card with ASIO and MIDI support.

But it does have an external one. So for the ASIO support, one of http://www.overclock.co.uk/product.p...t=492&view=rel these can tick the box.

But now is my problem, how would i go about connecting a MIDI keyboard in? Last time i checked MIDI ports on notebooks never existed.

All help appreciated

you can get USB to MIDI adaptors quite cheaply, the Edirol ones are quite good value

i personally have a Terratec Midi Hubble, cost me about AU$130 but it was the cheapest USB to MIDI device with 2in/2out (plus the three port usb1.1 hub on the back helps with my overload of usb devices)

EDIT: for asio soundcard, you may want to try something other than the CL card - that's designed as a consumer/gamer card, ASIO is just an afterthought

something like the Echo Indigo i/o (note: price in AUD) might be the way to go. Stereo In/Out, or if you find a nicely priced USB card, they can work well, again Edirol have some nicely priced ones, as do Behringer (I have the Behringer FCA202 firewire device, but they do have a cheaper USB2.0 card(UCA202) aswell and both natively support 24/96, unlike the creative card which relies on a hackjob to work)

If you like to stick on PCMCIA type cards, E-MU 1616 (<400$) and 1616M (<500$) are the best ones ATM.

i'd forgotten those emu pcmcia cards - but those external boxes are fairly large…
