upgrading from 2.0 sound

I can add either a single rear speaker (old-style surround) or two rear speakers (4.0 sound). But I need a cable run of 20-25 feet (6.1-7.6m), including the speakers' own cable, to get the cable on a route that won't pose a tripping hazard. But even if the speakers are powered, wouldn't this length be enough to degrade sound quality?

Either way, I can't add a front center speaker. The only place to put one would be right on top of the monitor's vent holes.
