odd DirectSound Error.

Ok, i am getting the " Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error Code 88780078 "

Now I looked around and found a few solutions.

I uninstalled my drivers for my sound card. (note i have a sound card in the pci slot and one on the mother board, i use the pci slot card. ) went and found new drivers online and reinstalled them. my card is a CMI8738/C3DX . this did not work.

Next i went and downloaded the newest directx 9 . this did not work either.

on all the forums ive looked at so far these two things have fixed the error.

Let me describe the oddness now.

on rebooting my comp, the sound works fine. ill play an mp3 or watch a movie, after running 2-4 different things the error pops up. mp3s give the Bad directsound driver, games run with no audio, .avi's will crash with the error cant render because there is no sound device. even stranger still it seems windows sounds play, i can hear the file click in windows explorer and the closing theme as windows shuts down.

I am running windows xp pro and i am sure my wires are plugged into the back and the right holes :P.

I also have recently started using a microphone with teamspeak/ventrillio software (online game communication software that runs independent of the game) but this worked fine for 2 to 2 and a half weeks before problems started.

anybody have any idea what i should do next plz post. i am hopeing a reformat is not necissary. thank you.

System Specs

something (or everything) isnt closing its sound usage...

& you mentioned you've got mobo+pci sound, does the bios have a way to disable the onboard sound? my asus has an 'off' & 'auto' setting right next to the onboard lan on/off setting
