Dont think it's the windows that makes the difference, it's the soundcard/drivers.

Sure the soundcard makes the quality of the sound, and without a good driver, there is nothing.
However, it is proclamed everywhere that XP home lacks of many features like advanced network, file security and other things that I have no idea what they do. The question is, if XP pro has a better gestion of the CPU or the memory or who knows what. BTW. despite what was said all over the net, XP home SP2 does see a duo core as 2 processors. And the 100$ question: is there any justification to spend them for an upgrade to XP pro, when all you do with your computer is MIDI & Audio. |

theres no benefit with any version of XP, you could say media center will benefit your experience with audio. you can sit back and relax and do everything easily. windows media player can boost sound quality with the built srs/wow

i think he meant for audio production/processing
iirc Pro has better file-management systems, i think when using NTFS - so it's really useful when working with large audio files

QFT i've 3 people i've built some Audio related production type system for, 2 of which DEMANDED the creative X-FI, which i had suggested not to get. Told them to look into the "truely" audio related products that can actually do the real deal. low and behold, they were pissed off within a few weeks of having nothing but issues with them doing whatever they were doing. (they moved to the onboard sound, woot for realteks HD audio ALC88x) Reguardless, XP Pro i personally find much more efficient. XP x64 however can deal out a very nice performance boost with raw audio files and the sheer size of them.

that i agree on, im no audiophiler. its more for dvd watching, home theater and gaming. its the same thing with video cards, why why would you buy a geforce or radeon for production when you actually need a quaddro or firegl

They only moved to the onboard while they waited for there production type sound card. But they were more happy with the onboard solution. Specially the recording quality.

Some Pro audio solutions are complicated to use. I think that if a guy would rather have a X-fi then say a delta 1010 or 1010LT then they should research a little more. It's there rig though and if that is what they want then great. I am with stick if they were more than happy with the quality of the recorded audio through onboard sound then they either have bad speakers or bad ears or both. You can easily hear the difference between a good 24/96 card and a onboard solution...BTW if your into recording audio on the PC using XP you should do some tweaking to get things working great...

Well for sound production XP ,pro or home is just as good..both need quite a bit of twekaing to get a real solid and fast system for audio production. A stock system is not really the way to go...you need to disable uneeded services and slim the system down...

Many thanks for the replies.
I've N'lited the XP , went through all the tweaks. disabled ,manualed services ... After all my system works fine. But you know those questions that bug all the time : "Could it be better ?" "Am I missing something ?" "Have I made the right choice ?" Thanks again for your help. |

Time will tell, Usually a lean quick system is the best for audio. They run so much better and without all the uneeded junk. IF your just sitting there mixing recording and mastering what do you need all the extra services for cloggin your system Ram? You don't you made the right choice and you will know that when you work with the system. Hope that helps. I have done the same thing in the past and it's great for audio work.
