CUBASE SX3 and SPDIF / MIDI

I have a Fender Cyber Twin SE which has SPDIF OUT and MIDI out on it. Either of which I would like to use and have tried to use. When I use SPDIF out, my DSP Mixer (I have a EMU 1212m sound card) sees the input and I can hear it. But when I go into cubase it does not detect any input. As far as midi goes (I believe I have the amp set correctly. I set it to MIDI Channel 6 out.) my DSP Mixer doesnt see any input nor does Cubase. I have windows XP PRO w/ latest updates.

Thanks for any help

your DSP will not see any input from the Midi simply because it's Midi, not audio - you need to set up cubase correctly to receive from that midi input

you also need to configure your sound card's mixer and/or cubase's audio hardware preferences to enable you to record from the SPDIF input

Alright thanks for the help. I wish I knew what the setting was. I've spent a good deal of time trying to figure this out but I just can't seem to solve the issue. I've read through my Fender Cyber Twin Amp manual, cover to cover, and the midi / SPDIF on it's end is definitely set up correctly. One weird thing that I have noticed is that when it's plugged into the midi port, it doesn't detect any input from my guitar, but when I raise and lower the volume on the amp, Cubase sees a signal comming from the amp. Any thoughts about that? I have the Cubase video tutorial and I seem to have configured everything correctly according to that. As far as SPDIF goes... I probably just don't understand my DSP well enough but, I have tried mapping the SPDIF port to the I/O Card L/R, WAVE 1/2, and several other ADAT ports, but it never detects any input. ARGH!! Well tomorrow I will be at this again until I finally get this.

Thanks for any help in advanced!

Make sure you have the samplerates set correctly onboth your amp and cubase. IIRC you may need to set a sample rate of 48khz for it to work properly (based on the emu's 10k2 chip)

This is probably Midi CC messages telling the computer that the level has been changed (you should be able to control the level of the amp via midi)

@ OP:

You DO understand MIDI is not an 'audio' signal - but more of a remote control thing - thats capable of triggering samples (which ARE audio in nature) in keyboards or KX Synth's or notes in SW synths.

So midi can 'cause' audio - its like your door bell button - it simply tells the hammers to strike the chimes - but the button dosent MAKE the door bell sound - just causes it it happen.

some very good info on the mechanics of MIDI - your post compels me to think this would be to your benefit to look into.

So the way you're putting this essentially is that; since there's midi in, out and thru on my amp there needs to be something that generates the noise. So I would have to, in once sense, have ableton running as a plugin, create a noise, then put that back into cubase and assign my amp to that noise?

what you need to do is assign the midi input from the amp in cubase to a midi synthesizer, VSTi or similiar, to produce a sound.

MIDI is simply instructions

Well - in the case of an amp (Cyber twin - being a guitar amp) - you guitar makes the noise - the MIDI allows 'automating' things like adjusting the tone controls - choosing amp/speaker sim algos, and patch selecting (and patch managing/editing from your computer if there is SW to do so - should come with the amp).
