5.1 (5300) Speakers Bass Not Working

Hello

I Have Soundblaster Platinum 5.1 and have installed the latest KX Driver.
My new Creative Inspire 5.1 (5300) speakers won't work though.
The front L/R and rear L/R function fine - but the subwoofer is only operating at about 10% volume.
When I unplug the rear speakers, the subwoofer kicks in. If I turn the balance towards the front (or rear) speakers, the subwoofer kicks in. But in "default" setting, no subwoofer. Any ideas?? I've tried everything I could think of and have tested all the cables and speakers, all fine. A chap I know has an older version of the 5.1 speakers and they work fine. Is it a problem with the 5300 version? anybody using this set-up succesfully?
