Audigy 2 ZS and Cubase SX 3

Hello!

I am currently using Cubase SX 3.1.1 with an Audigy 2 ZS card that I ordered off of EBay.

The trouble is, Cubase doesn't like the Soundblaster drivers; regardless of which one I choose (Creative ASIO or SB Audigy 2 ASIO), it crashes with an error that says "A serious error has occoured, please save the project under a different name." However, Cubase works just fine with the generic ASIO Multimedia Driver, but recording is a no-go with that. I understand that this error message is a catch-all so here is what I have in Cubasesx3.LOG:

What do I need to do to fix this? I have a fairly modern system, with 1 GB Ram, 7200 RPM SATA HDD, an AMD Athalon 64 3000+ (running 32 bit Windows), and my paging file is set to 1536 MB. I tried out kX audio drivers but MIDI did not work with these and the setup was quite confusing. Perhaps they aren't as confusing as I'd like to make out, but I need help getting them going and the documentation seemed a bit vague, unless there is specific setup instructions somewhere for the Audigy 2 ZS.

If anybody can help I will greatly appreciate it. I've even formatted and reinstalled to no avail. Thank you.

I should add that the SB driver DOES work; in fact, I just did a recording with it. However, I will get the "A serious error has occoured" message at random points and then the driver stops working completely, until I restart Cubase. Help please!

have you tried the Directsound based ASIO Driver for Cubase, or the Creative ASIO?

I know the DS based one will have a much higher latency, but it should be more reliable

however if that doesn't work for you, and you don't require EAX for gaming and such, i recommend the kX drivers (The latest version is posted in the kX support forums on this site)
it ma take you a few hours to get your head around the concept, but there's a few guides out there to help you get started

Thanks. I have not tried the DirectSound (I don't know what that is) but I have tried the Creative ASIO. Neither the SB ASIO or Creative ASIO driver are stable.

I think I'm going to give KX another shot though. The only problem I had with it really was that MIDI did not work at all. Perhaps the volume was just wrong and I didn't check. Thanks!

you mean midi playback? kX requires you to load a soundfont before it will play midi (there are several soundfont banks on your soundblaster install CD)

Cheers man.

I'll come back if I need more help. I'll retry the kX drivers today. Thanks.

Alright, I got kX installed again and I got MIDI working just like it should be. I really like the reversed outputs too, the rear output sounds so much better.

I have two problems:

1. I'm still getting these error messages in Cubase
2. I can't get any input from the line in jack, no matter what I do with the DSP setup. What is wrong?

I appreciate the help very much.

Alright, everything is fixed. It's a long story explaining how to fix the Cubase crashes, but long story short, my installer itself was corrupt.

Now, as for the Line In problem, it turned out I didn't know what I was doing with the kX DSP. So, I read up on it and got a working system. Check out these tutorials:

If you find this thread by searching the forums or google later when you have problems, I hope this helps! I'm replying with this in order to help out people that will inevitably run into the same problem as me because I was sick and tired of seeing threads that just run off the deep end with no resolution.

kX drivers are the best and I recommend them to anyone who has a compatible soundcard.

Peace.
