however according to that link, TrueHD cannoy be supported over an spdif/toslink connection (not enough bandwidth) - so the only way to meet that would be to use a HDMI connection - meaning you'd need both a soundcard, and a video card that supported this sort of hook-up - not exactly common (yet) otherwise you're stuck with the normal compressed dts/ac3 over an spdif connection

that's quite correct... But as i had mentioned, the rumorred product.. (which i'm not going to argue over as it's vaporware at this point ).... was rumorroed to have hdmi inputs specifically for the reason of supporting a lossless TrueHD 192khz/24bit audio format. And while a computer currently doesn't employ this EXCEPT for the HDMI motherboards available which can send a direct digital bit of information across it to amp no problems.... so long as a HD-DVD or some other form of media is available to make use of it, it IS indeed possible today, and quite cheap to do it... Not to mention that if i recall my information correctly, all the HD series of the ati cards support digital audio over HDMI 1.3 spec..... Yes the system needs work... i'm hoping realteks next chipsets have a HDMI 1.3 or newer compliancy output for audio specifically. along with a fiber/coax and the 8 analog channel audio out. The motherboards have room for it

i got my new speakers today, but my sub seems somewhat underpowered......
the satellites are powerful and clear, but i can hardly hear the sub even when maxed..... it seems like my old sub but clearer, is this normal? the system in general is clearer but i just hope i dont find myself with a defective unit.....

no that is NOT normal..
the z-5500 is considerably more powerful and drives a low tone very well throughout my entire hourse.. enough to rattle the lid on the toilet tank (which i should state isn't an older model and isn't light).... How do you you have it orientated? I run my sub at stock settings.. anything more and it's WAY to bloody much.... and i'm a low tone lover (i like to feel the back of my knee jiggle and my heart involuntarly beat )I usually have the port facing fairly close to a wall (1 foot - 3 feet if it's into a somewhat enclosed area)

yea my stuff is out in the open, my stuff is maxed out 100%
and im only running on a stereo output, but ill probably try and borrow my sisters desktop to run it on my X-fi the sub is not much more powerful than my z5300e sub at 100% going by the sound, the sub is nowhere near maximum output......

be careful..
what i do KNOW is that if your taking a stereo input audio format... the sub doesn't reproduce very well enless you use a matrixed format... even then it's not great... if you can feed it a full 5.1 surround sound.. that thing will blow your doors off... ![]() z5300e with it's analog input mode... the matrixed sound seem to be more capable of getting the sound out through the sub... i think it's the digital design of the system for the z5500 what are you using for sound right now anyways... why stereo? And if your using stereo... make sure you using the 3x2 triple stereo mode switch.... and not running it in 5.1 mode...

my gaud that explains everything..
even the HD audio analog out on the laptops i've had..... doesn't do very well at all.. they pretty much seem strickly tuned for headphones.. it's identical that of plugging in your sound system into the front panel audio jacks.......not even close to matching that of the rear jacks usually. even on a realtek chipset.....

yup i got realtek
so even adjusting the output to stereo and have sound come out all speakers still is not as good as them 100% on full 5.1 surround? dang im gonna get that old livingroom computer in here right now! i gotta hear this.....

remember, a 5.1 surround sound capable card using a 2 channel audio file isn't going to do the job still..
if you really want to show off the balls of the system.. grab your typical DVD Video player, plug the coax/optical into the z-5500 and pop in your favorite movie with a DTS/Dolby 5.1 format...... and turn it to about half volume, that should prove if the system is performing...
