Onboard sound problem...
Earlier, I plugged my guitar in to my line in port, and all was going well.
Normally, when I plug my guitar in, the sound only comes out of the left speaker, which I don't mind. I plugged in, and I played for a little bit, then the sound went dead. Now it seems that my left speaker clips all the time. Lots of pops and hissing... I don't think this is a problem with my speakers, because when I plug in my headphones, the same stuff happens with my left headphone. Did I "Break" my on-board sound?  Thanks

erg
depends.... is the audio being sent in through the line in a "preampped" signal.... that could potentially damage things... You have any information on the type of onboard sound you've got.... tried removing the drivers.. downloading the latest and installing them?

So I uninstalled the drivers, ran driver cleaner, and reinstalled, and it seems to have worked
 Question:  The slider circled was maxed out, could that have caused the clipping? When I test it and max it out, the left speaker clips again, but if I keep it at medium, it doesn't... |

that's a possibility..... usually on all the system i build.. the sliders are already set @ max values.... (excluding everything that's recording except for microphone)
That is a possibility that it was your issue. some motherboards onboard audio has pretty horrible volume controls and even distortion issues.....

I plan on buying this soon: NCIX.com - Buy Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE PCI 7.1 Surround Sound Card (OEM) - 30SB057000000 In Canada.
Will that be at least a little better than on-board sound? |

Er.. the SE cards are pretty horrible imo...
I wouldn't invest in a sound card that cheap either if you are even going to bother with getting a sound card just a fyi... I personally haven't found a sound card solution that is both cheap and decent quality with little issues. i mean now that your volume controlls are working and things seem to work correct "right"? probably best to save you money for a newer motherboard/cpu/memory... specifically one with Realteks HD ALC88x series *preferably one with ALC889a*... I just figure it's best not to possibly "fix" something that might have been broke awhile ago and is now working.
