Sound problem with PS3 SPDIF to soundcard

Hi all,
I got a PS3 and I have it wired up with optical out to my soundcard which is a Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-Express. So far I got as the sound coming from the PS3 XMB when I move around to select different options and stuff. But sometime there seems to be a 2-3 seconds delay before the sound comes out of the speakers.
When I load a game the sound just makes a loud screeching noise for roughly 5-10 seconds then it stops and no sound coming out of my speakers even when the game is fully loaded. So I am wondering if there some sort of problem that my soundcard couldn't able to decode the audio from the PS3 or is there some sort of setup error when I wire in all up.
I'm not sure if this is relevant but the display from PS3 is going out through HDMI.

Thanks you for your time reading my problem.
