??? speakers are noisy: how do I make them quite?

I have recently connected my stereo system to my computer via the aux function and it sounds a ton better than the crappy built-into-monitor speakers, but they are not silent when they should be.

They are noisy (like noise in a photo), white noise. Is there a program or something that can get rid of this noise?

System Specs

this noise can be caused by:
poor quality soundcard
poor quality cable
poor quality amplifier (in the stereo)
a noisy power circuit (caused by either the wiring, or any appliances connected to the same circuit)
or all of the above

but remember ALL audio devices have a noise floor, and if you crank the volume, you crank that noise floor

Also, make sure to mute all the output controls except the ones you use. (Probably just waveout, maybe midiout). It's common for them to pick up noise.

that'sa good point, especially if you have the mic input un-muted and at a pretty high level, you'll get a fair amount of noise from the card's built in preamp

Also, check your levels on your onboard. As DJ_Stick mentioned you might have this "noisy" onboard cranked up and passing the noise to the receiver. If you back off on the Volume a bit it may makes the noise a bit better. I would suggest if your serious about using your stereo with your PC, Get a quality soundcard. You don't need to spend alot of money to get better sound then your onboard. Hope this helps.
