Odd skips and cracks... help please :(

Lately I've been hearing alot of little skips, cracks, squeals, just odd sounds during my audio. It seems to only really happen with Winamp, CoolEdit, and Counter-Strike, but I don't know. It could be the drivers I suppose (I have an Audigy 2 with the latest drivers from Creative), but it only started recently. Renegade said it has something to do with 5.1, but I don't have 5.1, or that it might be because I have other programs that use audio running in the background, but I always do and its never happened before. Besides, it still happens when I turn them all off.
This is really starting to drive me insane. Could it be my headphones maybe? Argh, I'm going to burn this thing.

It could be your headphones, but let's try.
Full system config? IRQ conflicts (if any)? Have you tried kX drivers?

I assume you only have headphones, not speakers to see if it occurs with them as well ? Have you tried muting your line-in(s)? Is your SoundStorm audio enabled also?

Full system config:
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon XP 2400+ oc'd to 2800+ (166x13.5)
2 x 256mb Corsair XMS PC3500
Western Digital 80GB Special Edition
nVidia GeForce 3 Ti 500
Creative Audigy 2
Plantronics Audio .90 headphones
Windows XP Professional w/ SP1

Latest drivers on everything. No IRQ conflicts. I haven't tried the kX drivers... yet. What improvements and changes do they have compared to Creative's drivers?

Yes, I only have headphones. Line-In is muted. SoundStorm is disabled... I believe. Where would I find out?

Back when I had an Audigy, I heard those "skips" too.

In the BIOS, I think . . . is there a setting for enable/disable on-board audio?

I have similar problems..... with my Audigy.

I recently started to get small skips/stutters when playing MP3 in Winamp. Especially when I open new Internet Explorer windows, or starts a program. Its really annoying.... since I never had one single stutter/skip before!

Apparently its not just me... maybe a driver problem? Maybe Creative's drivers don't like Nvidia's. I don't know

What IRQ's are your cards with?

It's important Creative sound cards be around the 5 - 7 range for some reason.

One thing else you can try that works sometimes is to turn on the PCI Memory hole. Okay this isn't the exact term for it since I can't quite remember what it's called but it's in your bios. Once you see it you will understand what I'm talking about.

Also if you've used your soundstorm before adding the audigy you might want to check for inactive drivers and remove those in safe mode. You can check for them by running msinfo or dxdiag I forget which atm, save it as text somewhere like my documents open it up and scroll down a bit and if you have any it will show as inactive video and inactive sound registries.
all programs/accessories/system tools/system information.

At the system information screen select file export thats your msinfo.
For DXdiagnostic info go to tools from the same screen as above select DirectX diagnostic tool after it loads hit the save all information button. Those 2 items helps out alot in tracking down problems...providing you can make sense of it all, of course I olny understand just enough to troubleshoot EverQuest to a small extent
