SB X-Fi Elite Pro Install Problem

Trying to fix a problem installing Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro (model SB055A) on a Vista 64bit PC. I installed the new SB Sound Card and software (using OEM CD). After the install, I could see all of the Sound Blaster audio applications, but when I ran them, the computer couldn't recognize the audio device.

I tried installing the latest version of the x-fi driver (SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0004) but the machine seized up half-way thru the install process. I end up having to reboot the PC.

I also tried a beta version of the driver (SBXF_PCDRVBETA_US_2_18_0006), but got the same error. Would a "mod'ed" driver fix the problem of the device not being recognized? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
