Sad Audigy 2 Playback Difficulties

Heya. After lots of checking and looking around, I finally resigned myself to asking for help, as audio never was my strong point, but I dont like to bother people about my problems.

Basically, Im running a fairly archaic pc, using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 soundcard and Windows XP Home edition, and while it hasnt failed me in 4 odd years, recently my sound has been having trouble.

Basically, I hear some sounds fine, like the windows sounds, and in the case of music, i only hear part of the music, an example would be that I hear the music in a song, but not the singers voice. Im assuming this is because sound files have overlapping soundtracks that make up the entire file, but I've no idea whats caused this problem or how to fix it. Also, streaming internet videos and sounds are completely unhearable, with no sound at all.

As I use an audio cable as an extension to my headphones, plugged into my soundcard slot at the back of the machine, I assumed maybe the cable was to blame but after replacing it, theres been only a slightly better increase in sound, but not a fix in the problem. After this, I reinstalled windows and my audigy drivers, an older version from about 8 months ago, to no luck.

Most recently, I removed my audigy drivers and installed the kX audio drivers, and this still has not fixed the issue. As far as I can tell, the drivers are not to blame, so maybe it is a windows setting or settings that is doing this, or possibly it is my sound card having difficulties, or perhaps the cable splitter i use for my headphones and pc speakers plugged into my soundcard is the cause.

Those are the only conclusions I can draw, but i dont have the knowledge to know which to act on, if anyone knows what might be the problem, ill take all the help i can get.

EDIT: I just tested my speakers, and for some reason, they work absolutely fine. Its only the headphones that seem to recieve the sound troubles. Just confuses the problem even further.
