After a bit more than 2.5 years, over the last few days they are dying on me. The right can decides when to work depending on its mood. Lots of noise, playing with the cable achieves nothing.
Very sad, I love this pair and the sound it creates. Plus no money for new now so...FRAK.

I don't know when I will buy a new one (I have to since I use them "24/7"), but any suggestions for cheap-ish headphones of equal sound quality?

I don't have any experience with such expensive kit so I'm a little afraid of making any suggestions, but if you're looking for something (really) cheap, I find the sound of Sennheiser HD 201 quite pleasing and they are also pretty comfortable and provide very good isolation.

I can't afford anything as expensive (which are not THAt expensive) as my 271S, but I find it difficult to look for anything other than AKG. I just love the way they sound with very subtle but important bass, very crisp highs and meds like no other.

I might get some lower model AKG, I don't know. I am expecting some money tomorrow or the day after (not much), so perhaps I will get a low end AKG.

I tend to buy budget/entry-level headphones, I can recommend either the Koss PortaPro or the Sennheiser PX100. I'm no audiophile but they both sound great to me. Both are on-the-ear headphones though so not sure if those are the type you are looking for.

For some reason they work again. I don't know why, or for how long, but I will use them for as long as I can.

headphones can be a bit finicky like that - if it's the right cup that's not working, could be an issue with the cable going through the headband... haven't seen the AKGs close up, but you might be able to fix/replace that cable

also try unplugging and replugging the headphone cable - your pair should have a removable cable with a mini-xlr socket - try cleaning that out aswell
