Preparing hardware mod of X-fi cards - information needed

I'm going to appeal to the members of this board to provide me with information for a database that will help me plan for a hardware modification of X-fi cards. More details on that later.

What I will need, should you choose to help me, is:

1. the exact model of your X-fi card. Often the model silkscreened on the board is wrong, for instance all Dell OEM cards say "SB0460" whereas in fact they are SB0467. The most reliable way to determine the exact model number is from the serial number. The serial number is on a sticker on the back of the card, like so:

In this case the serial number is MSB0240240030167. The serial number indicates that it's a model SB0240. What I would like you to post is the first 8 digits of your card's serial number (for instance if you had this card you would post "MSB02402")

2. The card's Hardware ID as seen by the driver. To do that:

-if you're on XP: go to control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager -> sound, video and game controllers -> soundblaster X-fi -> details tab; in "details" choose from the drop list "matching device ID". There will be a string displayed; please copy that string and post it here.

-if you're on Vista/Win7: control panel -> device manager -> sound,video and game controllers -> soundblaster x-fi -> details tab -> from the drop list, choose "hardware IDs"; there will be one or more strings displayed. Please copy those strings and post them here.

Thanks!

Thanks - keep 'em coming!

I won't be able to work on the hardware mod itself until sometime next week when I expect to get a few components in the mail. What I can say is that it'll be something similar to the Live! to Live! 5.1 Hardware Upgrade

Is that one of the low profile (half height) cards? Nice, that is completely new information for me.

And a little more info on my project. My goal is to take this table: http://www.creative.com/soundblaster/X-FiList/ and see if I can turn all the "no"s into "yes"es.

Re: Preparing hardware mod of X-fi cards - information needed

Preliminary results show that the hardware mod was successful; but I'm on a trip now and won't be able to do any in-depth testing until next week when I get back home.

BTW I would still like to get some data from owners of model SB0466 (X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS).

Re: Preparing hardware mod of X-fi cards - information needed

Short announcement: I have now confirmed that the hardware mod works. I have transformed a Dell OEM XtremeMusic (SB0467) into a full retail XtremeMusic (SB0460) by modifying the firmware and changing the HardwareID therein. The card installs on a fresh computer with the official drivers downloaded from Creative's website as a full XtremeMusic with all the functions enabled and working correctly, including the Dolby/DTS decoder (which was disabled previously).

Why did I do this? Because there are plenty of cheap OEM cards on eBay, which can be reborn into full retail versions for practically no extra cost.

I will next try to convert similarly a XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro (which also has the Dolby decoder disabled by default) into a Fatal1ty FPS.

If there is interest on this board I will post full details on the mod so that anyone can do it.

BTW here's the old HardwareID string:
Code:
PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0005&SUBSYS_10031102&REV_00
And here's the new HardwareID after modding:
Code:
PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0005&SUBSYS_00211102&REV_00

Dude.............. that's my mother-effin' DREAM. I've been wanting the decoder feature SOOO much, i can't even describe it. I too have a 0467 (my older card, an Audigy2 ZS, had this feature), and it's been incredibly dissapointing having a full-featured external i/o panel & superior sound card only to be stripped of the DD/DTS decoding at driver level.

Thanks in advance. I'm eager to try your permanent fix

Re: Preparing hardware mod of X-fi cards - information needed

Quick update, I have turned a X-fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro into a Fatal1ty FPS, which again enables DD and DTS decoding. I first tried to mod it into a Auzen Prelude 7.1, and it worked, was recognized as such by the unmodified Auzen drivers and installed with all the features including DDL/DTS connect, however... no sound would come out of the jacks. So I re-modded it into a FPS, and it worked nicely, I even got sound now.

Good work jh1523! I'm also eager to learn how you did it.

I have noticed that jp2 on my 0467 grounds the wp pin of the eprom.
Were you able to reprogram the eprom without removing it from the card?

Nope, soldering/desoldering required...

I'm currently pondering how much detail to include in the procedure. My goal is definitely not teach anyone how to desolder and solder SMT components, so I won't provide much detail as to how to do that physically. You either already know how to do it, or you will have to find someone to do it for you.

Re: Preparing hardware mod of X-fi cards - information needed

After looking at the Live to Live 5.1 page I suspected that removing the eprom would be required. Thanks for the info!

I've cut the cable off an old parallel port webcam to use to construct a eprom programmer.

Did you just have to change the 1003 to 0021 or were there more changes that needed to be made?

Re: Preparing hardware mod of X-fi cards - information needed

1003 => 0021 and 002c => 0023 respectively.

BTW I used PonyProg PonyProg - Serial device programmer with a serial SI-prog interface SI Prog schematics

In any case, you need a I2C-capable programmer. I found that it doesn't matter whether you use 24C or 24F series eeproms, they all work the same in this application (my 0467 had originally a 24F32 on, but a 24C32 works).

Also I didn't just reprogram the eeproms but rather read them then program blank chips with the modified firmware (saved the original chips intact). You can get samples for free from microchip.com

If you want to save yourself the trouble of building a programmer, you can get compatible hardware on eBay for about 20 bucks, for instance this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/24Cxx-93Cxx-and-...item1c123c60f0
And of course the SOIC-8 to DIP-8 adapters - search for "soic dip adapter"; for instance this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/SOIC-adapter-boa...item414a33b8fa

you need to read your eeprom 93c46 (remove it from your card and put it into a programator ) and save the content of it to a bin file , 0467 has dd and dts "hardware" decoder disabled also l;acks some other features

I did not need the bin file from the 0460. Read previous post from jh1523.
(1003 => 0021 and 002c => 0023 respectively. ...)
1003=0467, 0021=0460, (002c=>0023 checksum I guess).
