Need a Great Set of Headphones :)

I need a good/great set of gaming headphones. I don't need a mic. This is just for ps3/360 gaming. The girlfirend is giving me some grief about the surround sound lol... I have a DD Yamaha receiver (only a yr old ~1000 bucks) that I will be inputting the headphones into. Any suggestions on a snazzy set of headphones?

Thanks in advance to the fine folks of HH

Thinking of one of these $99 ones. What do you think?

Re: Need a Great Set of Headphones :)

Price range?
Edit: just saw your edit. Stay away from the Sonys. Not worth it. Out of that list, the Sennheiser PX100II. BTW, stay away from the PX200II. Even at $30 more they aren't worth it. You'd think the design of the cups would make these headphones more comfortable, but they don't. Plus the don't sound as good as the PX100II.

Personally I use the Koss PortaPro for everything. They have a lot of bass to them, so if you use them on a stereo just remember to turn up the treble a bit more. I have one pair for home use (PC/music/360/PS3/movies), and the other is with my Sony MP3 player (btw, these have a lifetime warranty). Usually the cheapest place I find is Ebay for $35-$40 (retails for $60-$70), sometimes cheaper, but I've found other places like NCIX sometimes has them on sale for $30. The one thing I do is change out the pads for the Sennheiser PX100 ones as they are more comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and last longer too. You can get those on Ebay too for $10 a pair. Oh, there's also a 25th Anniversary Limited Edition of these out there too, but I've never seen them below $60.

Speaking of which, that's another set to look at: the Sennheiser PX100. Anytime you see people talking about the Koss PortaPro someone always brings up the Sennheiser PX100.

For very fine music listening I also have a pair of Grado SR-125 (Grado replaced these with the SR-125i), although they were expensive. You could probably get away with the SR-60i, but the best bang-for-the-buck Grados would be the SR-80i, and if you look hard enough you might get them for $100-125. Of note: all of these headphones NEED to be used on an amp, so while your stereo would be able to drive these your PC wouldn't unless you have a card that has a built in amp, and for sure you won't be able to use these on an MP3 player unless, again, you use a portable amp.

My last suggestion would be Harman Kardon's line: AKG. Only problem is that I can only suggest the K271 as I've never used the lower ends. I don't know if you can get them anymore as I think they were replaced with the MK II. Oh, and these aren't cheap, but if you look around you might get them for around $150 (look at the DJ sites in particular, and Ebay).

Edit: BTW, since you linked to Future Shop, do you mind me asking where in Canada are you? Are you in Toronto? The reason I ask is that if you are you might want to go down to Bay and Bloor, to Bay Bloor Radio. They have a wall set up with a bunch of the headphones they carry, including Bose, Grado, AKG, and Sennheiser among others, all of which you can test out.

Re: Need a Great Set of Headphones :)

Great me thinks I'll take your advice Much thanks!

Actually the one's you've suggested I think will allow in too much external noise? I think I'll go with the Sennheiser Headband Headphones (HD428). Think these will be fine?

Re: Need a Great Set of Headphones :)

Speaking of which, NCIX has the Koss PortaPros on sale for $39.99 HERE, and while I've never used these myself they also have the Sennheiser HD555s on sale for $129 HERE. One person I know that has these say they are very comfortable due to them having full cups that go around the ear (plus the material is soft), and sound really good (clear highs, good midrange, and solid bass).

BTW, take a look at these reviews on CNET for these 2:

Koss PortaPro (I love the comment that, "Some will not like the 80s aesthetic." I get that a lot from people I recommend these to. They don't look bad, just a bit out dated, but once you listen to them you won't give a rats a$$ what people think they look like. You'll just be laughing your a$$ off, listening to great sounding music with great sounding headphones while all those poor SOBs are using their Apple earbuds thinking they are the best things in the world. LOL!)

Sennheiser HD555

As for the Sennheiser PX100-II THIS review sums up the older PX100s very well, and that also relates to the PX100-II too. Read the review, as you will see that the PX200/PX250 get slammed hard, then go to the very bottom to get the word on the 100s under "The Good News" section of the review. Once you do you'll understand what I meant about the comparisons people make between them and the Koss PortaPro.

Re: Need a Great Set of Headphones :)

Haven't used them myself, but I've had people tell me they were really good (comparable to the Sennheiser HD555, but more comfortable)). One guy in particular games with these. They are supposed to be very comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time, and produce very clear sound, but sometimes the high tons can be a bit "bright", although for gaming this is a plus as you will be able to pick out every little sound.

LOL! Man, if I told that guy how much Amazon is selling these for he'd probably s**t bricks as he paid $200 or so for these. LOL!

Very good find there, Randy, and at a damn good price too. Let us know what you think of them.
