What are the main hardware parts involved with streaming audio from the internet? And how important is each?

you don't really need any hardware other than a computer, modem, sound card, speakers

If you mean internet radios, youtube etc. sources then, the streamed data is maybe quite low quality audio (low bitrate, lowpassed, etc.). Thought there are many internet radiostations which sends 192-256kbps streams (or maybe even higher bitrate) i suppose most still are 128kbps streams.

What this means for your question is, hardware isn't very important in most cases but, if it is then, those parts needed for to deliver you what you hear are the critical ones ... especially headphones/speakers.
