Re: No sound, just random beeps

Hello, and welcome to the forums!

Dell normally sold that machine with 2 flavours of sound cards: ADI SoundMax, which is built onto the motherboard, and a Creative Labs SBLive 5.1 3rd party add-in card which was a optional part. When installing the 3rd party card the onboard one is normally disabled, either automatically (if supported by the bios), or manually. However, going by what you posted it would appear that you did choose the optional Creative Labs card. If I'm right, more than likely when you were moving the PC the Creative Labs sound card has, maybe very slightly, popped up out of it's PCI slot. Windows sees it still (as evident by the listing you posted), but not to the point where it's disabling the onboard.

So, here's what you do. First, physically open up the computer, and confirm that you have a physical Creative Labs SBLive! sound card installed. If so, remove it, reinsert it, and power up the computer. Be sure to use the audio jacks (should be the green one) on THIS sound card, and not the top audio jacks that are just under the USB ports (those ones are for the onboard audio). If it works you should see the Creative Labs SBLive! listing within Device Manager under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers". If it works, great, if not, try uninstalling all audio drivers from within Add/Remove Programs (if you have both SoundMax and Creative, remove them both), and download/install the Creative drivers off of Dell's site.

One other thing. It's quite possible that the bios battery in your computer is dead as well. When it is dead the machine relies on the incoming power to keep your bios settings "alive", if you will. When you unplugged the machine to move it the bios settings (not the bios itself) would then get erased, essentially reset. If this is the case, more than likely the setting that disables the onboard audio chip would have been reset back to it's default ON setting, and you've got 2 audio cards fighting for control. Easy way to confirm this would be to go into the bios, and double check the settings there. A good question to ask would be, when you moved the machine did it ask you to reset anything, or did you notice that you had to reset the clock within Windows (was it back to something like 1/1/2000 or some such)? Edit: If so, then this is a good indication of the bios being reset.
