Setting up PC's for Audio work?

im just Setting up my PC for Audio work, I tend to format when im going to write some tune's
anyway Ive got M-audio audiofile,MSI neo2 board p4.

I have just switched back to 98se because I was having audio stuttering on record.
It would play back well but on record it was messing up,I was using cubaseVST 5.1r1.

What tweaks do you lot do to set up your computer for smooth recording?

i.e - adjust Vmem to max min same size.
cut out any resident programs, disable task sceduler etc.
I also use 98lite to Take some crap out of windows.
