notebook & AC3
hello!
I'm about to buy a laptop-computer and I wonder about audio-out and the possibility to get AC3 sound from the laptop to the decoder.. as it would be nice to watch DivX movies with good sound.. so if the laptop has an ordinary soundcard - as I haven't found any laptop that would specifically have a 5.1 soundcard or something - would it be possible to get AC3 sound? .. uh.. my english isn't working too well this early in the morning but hopefully someone understands ![]() .. well, nothing else right now.. thanks! |

Some notebooks (few) have optical outputs which would let you connect it to a reciever that could decode it.

You might just have to get a USB soundcard. M-audio has a nice one (Sonica Theater).

Hi,
I´ve got an Acer Aspire 1300 with a normal Stereo Sound Card. Is it really not possible without an external USB 5.1 Sound Card to output a Dolby Digital Stream to an external receiver? If Yes, why not? The Sound Card just doesn´t encode anything... |

Check Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo series, most of them has combined stereo/optical output, and you can send nice quality 48KHz/16bit stereo or even 5.1 AC3 to the external decoder/amplifier...

you have to make sure that any soundcard with toslink/spdif out also encodes in AC-3, other wise it will be a stereo source
