M-Audio Revolution 7.1

I have been working with a lot of data and video related hardware as of late, and the fact of the matter is that I have been ignoring my PC audio for some time. For the past few months my attention has been in the sound system installed in my Bimmer, and before that my Harman/Kardon based home theater unit. For the longest while I was running benchmarks and worrying about framerates and bandwidth…what I hadn’t even had a chance to experience with all of the work going on was my audio quality. With a brief respite in the flow of new video cards I took the time to choose a set of headphones and a soundcard to cater to my repressed audiophile desires. After looking at some online businesses and various white papers I decided to take the opportunity to ask the good people at M-Audio if they would let me give their new Revolution 7.1 a test drive. As for the headphones Zalman gave me the pleasure of their outstanding Theater 6 gaming monsters. I was once again geared up to make the first big audio jump since my first Live! Card years back…

Thanks for the link Skull. The chip is basically the same as the HT-S that Chaintech uses in their bundled 9CJS Zenith mainboard kit. It is also used in their 27.00 (free shipping incl) PCI bus card (AV-710). Considering that I am using chipset (VIA audio - KT133 chipset) audio, I'm searching for a really inexpensive upgrade that will make a real difference in my perception of the computer's sound quality - The M-Audio Revolution would fill that bill except that is 90.00. The review was helpful, and games playing well matters to me (but I don't do that a lot - my kids do), but it is music and TV/DVD sound that matters more to me. The reviewer seems to share that attitude.

If you live near a CompUSA you might want to check their prices out. I've seen them there as low as $75.00.

Necrosis,

Thanks for the tip on the Revolution. Yeah, I've pretty much decided that the Revolution is the card I want. Clean, distortion-free music and movie sound is what I want most out of a sound card, and the Revolution fits the bill the best. Money is the only obstacle though, that's why I would like to hear some feedback from anyone with a mucho-cheapo Chaintech audio solution with the same type chip.
