Recording line in?

That's the question, I have never actually tried this before- but what is a good way to record in high quality, the line in from my Fortissimo III 7.1?

Is there any easy program to use or way to do it? I want to eventually change the recordings to a .wave or .cda file to burn to a CD.. or maybe directly record them as very high quality MP3's and then convert them into wave's or cda's..

How complicated (or easy) is this process?

First, plug the device you want to record from into the line-in plug.

Use high volume on the device, you're recording from, and as low volume as possible (with a decent result) in the mixer settings for line-in.

Record into any wave editor, like GoldWave, SoundForge, WaveLab (you name it), be sure to select that you want to record to a stereo track (if that's what you want to )

After that, you can save it as a WAV file and encode to MP3 (or encode to MP3 directly if thats what you want)

EDIT: Don't overdo the bit depth/sampling rate. If you're recording from an LP player, 44100Hz 16-bit will be more than enough.

The 44100 frequency means, that all frequencies above ((44100/2)-2000) = 20050 hertz will be cut off, and that there will be 44100 samples that describe the sound each second. The 16-bit part indicates, that for each sample (44100 per second), 16 bits will be used to describe the data.

Hope you can use it

Yeah, that sounds like exactly what I want to do.. I have my TV digital cable box hooked up to my line on my Fort III 7.1 (in stereo with really nice gold plated RCA patch cables).

I was just using it for listening to TV over my PC speakers, but I get all those digital cable music channels, and they sound like they are very high quality, enough to make some personal CD's for my girlfriend to listen to in her car- or whatever.

I think it will work, and make some pretty nice sounding CD's..

Yeah, that sure sounds like a nice way to get music - and the quality of the Fortissimo is certainly also decent enough to get a good sounding end result

*sigh* if only there was digital TV here

If you using a audio device such as a CD walkmans Headphone out or some kinda of system that has a volume control... setting it to max will make a mess...

If there is ever a chance that you can hook up to a Neutal Audio out.... that's the thing to use for linein.... do some audio test and adjust your Volume control in your mixer.... usually i set it to or just below that...

LP's are really hard to deal with....sometimes.... there are some nice programs that'll auto matically create seperate files for each song... as long as they don't mix into each over... or stop and start at the same time.... very nice... can't remember what it is called but i think i have it somewhere on here.... used it when i was recording from Lp/8 track/tape/rip proof cd to the computer.. and buring them

Yeah, I'm using a line out from a Scientific Atlanta explorer 3100 digital cable box- it sounds excellent. I wouldn't attempt it w/ a record player or crappy portable.. This sounds like DVD quality or better.

Actually It has a digital out (but not optical)... it has to have a a Dolby digital decoder added and connected to the digital coaxial out--. Not sure of the output specs..
