Microsoft Alaw codec problem

I am having trouble getting audio to come through on a movie I downloaded. When I open the file, it says error downloading codec. When I use a video file info program, it says the Microsoft Alaw codec was used for the file. Where can I get this codec for my Windows XP machine. I have tried microsoft's web site and also the codec packs like Nimo and Ace's. Any ideas about how to repair or replace this codec?
