System Specs

Overdrive Soundcard Output

My school's music computer's soundcard is acting really strangely.

The soundcard is a soudnblaster live! 5.1 (SB010x) on kX.

When connected to the 2TRN input of the mixer (also called TAPE IN), which is a line level source, the peak meter on the mixer shows peaks of up to over +17dB from the rear line out, and slightly lower levels from the front out.

The software peak-meter in the kX DSP, however, never peaks above 0.0.
Even with the master volume in the software program at <50% you can still here distortion through the mixer (even though the mixer does not peak above 0.0 anymore).

I am assuming this is a hardware issue, similiar to the one reported here, as i cannot understand how the software shows no gain, whereas the output does.

I do not believe it to be the mixer, because even with a pair of headphones attacted directly to the line-out port, there is a considerable amount of noise audible.

Could it be line noise from the CPU fan? The system is an old p3 board, i will find out the manufacturer and model at school tomorrow.
