Default Post Audigy dead... [comeback]

Well, oK, my Audigy went dead again, same thing happened...
I don't know if I'll be able to get a replacement this time, but in the mean time I'd like to hear 'bout some alternatives the market has to offer cuz I'm really pissed @ Creative!

What I need in a card is 'unprecedented' audio clarity (unhoaxed 24/96+ output), optical I/O and a DD/DTS onboard decoder chip...

Suggestions kindly appreciated!

What price range; is gaming important?

Somewhere 'round Audigy Platinum price range? And no, gaming's not important, I just want 'better than good' sound coming out of my speakers!

What is important (as I've said before): DD/DTS decoding, optical I/O, 24/96 output, full 5.1 speaker support... you get the point...

Yeah, a great card... but one thing troubles me... Is there a way to connect my speakers to it digitally? (via the three-pole mini stereo jack) ...
...and yeah, it lacks an onboard DD decoder (if I'm not mistaken...)... I need it, as I'm using digital optical output from my DVD player -> optical input on the card |decode process| -> speakers... Any chance of doing the same on the 6fire?

Your really limiting your choices because you want 24 bit play back ability. Though nothing you actually listen to takes advantage of this; unless your doing professional recording . Well maybe audio DVD's but who is buying them yet? Not me. You are going to have a problem since your speakers require a proprietary input. Creative only likes to worry about their own brand of products; they figure if you bought their speakers you have their card too. I don't know if there is some kind of patch cord which will let you convert this over to a coxial and/or true fiber optic. If so my guess it is expensive and "probably" not easy to find.

The Terratec card utilizes DTS if I am reading the specs right. DTS is actually slightly better than DD because it's not compressed as much. If your DVD's are also encoded with this they should work fine. Here are two more cards for you to look at to give you some idea what is out there.

Audiotrak Prodigy 192

Hercules Digifire 7.1

I want to make it known here and now I'm not recommending these cards. Personally I don't feel right recommending something I haven't personally used or had experience with. There isn't much for specs listed on the European Hercules site so I don't know any more about the card than what is said at site. It does look like a very nice card though; doesn't appear to be available in thes States yet either.

I almost forgot...

The only card I know off the top of my head to use the same digital out connection like Creative uses is the Santa Cruz.

Default Post ...

Thanx for an extensive reply!

With all this madness over sound cards I think I'll get rid of it all and just go for a 'normal' HIFI solution...

I dunno how long I'm gonna wait for a new Audigy this time, but I hardly think I'm even going to plug it in again - selling it would be a wise decision...

btw. both cards you mentioned in the last reply aren't available on Croatian market yet, but are due soon, so I won't think 'bout it 'til that day comes...

Question to all readers: Am I the only one who had to get his Audigy replaced TWO times?

I doubt it. I bet you're one of thousands.

God you guys are sometimes really blind...lost two Audigys eh? Maybe you should set your FSB down a little bit, you're probably running the poor PCI slots on that old mobo at 40mhz! (Standard is 33mhz) Creative cards and some network adapters HATE being overclocked, and I've seen more than a few 10/100 nics fry in systems with the PCI bus clocked at 36mhz.

Maybe that's why you won't get an return on your card...

Or...buy a better motherboard.

And/Or Processor. It would be cheaper to get a 1.2 Gig P3 than a new sound card..considering what you want.

No....o... that's not the case... but comment appreciated anyway...
...and being blind is sometimes really annoying, I just can't seem to see where the money for my new motherboard is...

I'm telling you, that's your problem. Don't listen to me, whatever, but watch as more crap fails down the road...maybe a harddrive reports a bad sector or two...a cd-rom drive thrashes fiercely...you're just begging for trouble with a sensitive audigy. Or any other PCI 2.2 card that uses all it's available bandwidth.

...and I'm telling you that's not my problem, since my PCI bus's running @33MHz (yes, it's possible to set that kind of a ratio in my BIOS)...

Everything else is running very smoothly, so I guess Creative's to blame!

Default Post kX and a 'live' Audigy...

oK guys, I'm totally baffled!

I've dL-ed the newest release of the kX drivers, cleaned the registry of all Creative thingys and pluged my 'dead' Audigy back into the PCI slot...
Guess what; it works, but only partially

For instance, there's some center channel crossovering which can be really annoying, the DD decoding doesn't work, and there's abs. no way in getting optical input to actually work...

Now, what to do? ...am still planning to replace my Audigy, but maybe there could be a way to bring it back to life...?

Have you tried the card in a different machine? I would advise you do that if only for sh_ts & giggles.

The 'last' one didn't work in other computers with different OS's, but I'll try this one; just out of curiosity
