Wolfson WM8728

While browsing through the document section of the kX website, I noticed this documentation for the Wolfson WM8728 DAC. I've heard that this DAC is what makes the Chaintech AV-710 soundcard sound superior to SB Live! and Audigy cards. At the same time, the Chaintech drivers are rumoured to be the weak point of the card.

So I was wondering, since I found this DAC on the kX website, is it possible to find a Soundblaster with this DAC?

i doubt it… afaik creative uses sigmatel and philips codecs
but you *can* use any DAC you want IF you want to build you own digital to analogue converter… using the AUD_EXT pinout for the digital outputs

I don't have much experience at building electronic devices such as DACs, but I could give it a try. This would also in effect give me an extra output from the card.

Thanks for the help.

you can get upto 6 extra outputs using s/pdif, and possibly 2 or 4 using i2s… www.electricstart.de has some electronics - mainly inputs - but if you contact the site owner (a member of the forum here - travelrec, a regular poster in the kX forum) i'm sure he can modify the designs slightly to help you

running the card with the kX drivers gives you better control of each output - with a 5.1 soundcard with these mods you can send a different signal to each speaker set

Thanks Dj Stick. I actually found a great deal of useful stuff on the site you linked to, especially concerning the Aud_Ext Connector.
