Winamp5 5.05

Nullsoft Winamp is a fast, flexible, high-fidelity media player for Windows. Winamp supports playback of many audio (MP3, OGG, AAC, WAV, MOD, XM, S3M, IT, MIDI, etc) and video types (AVI,ASF,MPEG,NSV), custom appearances called skins (supporting both classic Winamp 1.x/2.x skins and Winamp 3 freeform skins), audio visualization and audio effect plug-ins (including two industry dominating visualization plug-ins), an advanced media library, Internet radio and TV support, CD ripping, and CD burning.

i generally use WMP… no extra fx, flat EQ… so i hear the music as close to how it was recorded as possible… plus constantly swapping between PC music and portable audio you can really tell the differences in the FX, you can hardly recognise the intros to some songs

I found the latest "lite" packages of Winamp 5 to be really good as a resource effective mp3-only player. The installer has improved greatly over older versions so that one can choose not to install several parts of even this small version. The full v5 package has so much that I don't really want to have in a "mp3 player". I care not for skins either, but the Winamp plugin engine could be nice to have around for whatever reason.

Speaking of decoder/effect plugins, there is an old v2 plugin that I find interesting, MAD for Winamp. It doesn't add any effects but seem to simply be a wee bit better as a decoder than the standard Winamp MP3 engine, wich supposedly has not changed much since v2 either. Perhaps I'm just imagining it as the difference is minute, but i feel like the sound gets improved at least with some types of music. Being old it does not support newer ID3 tag standards, though that's another thing I never really cared all that much for.

Five is a bit of a resource hog but I still use it. I like the ability to watch Internet TV and Internet radio.

V3 to V5 is pretty stunning... for resource and overall system resource usage... it's way better then v3... and just a smidge more then v2

V5 kicks ass

There was a security fix, that's why they released it in first place.
I still like foobar2000 better, simply because of simpler interface, Unicode support, ReplayGain support, and native playback of more formats.
