Decoding from external source

Hey guys, I have an audigy 2zs without that external drive. What I want to know if it is possible to get my external dvd player to hook into my soundcard using coaxial output? I've read something about using cd_spdf pins or something but I don't really know how to connect these.

Any help would be great thanks.

Possible to connect! but impossible to connect by coaxial output. you need the stuff: Optical in. Connect Optical in of your Audigy2 ZS and Optical out of your DVD player by a optical fiber cable. But if your sound card is retail model, you need to buy a bracket which has optical in jack or you DIY one. Then hook the optical in jack on your card, reading the thread, Soundblaster Live! and Audigy Pinouts.
I think you'd better get an extenal drive.

classic_leon is wrong

if the DVD has coaxial output then you can definately use the CD_SPDIF - it supports both TTL and standard level S/PDIF sources

you just need to build a cable with the standard CD_SPDIF connector on one end and then connect it to an RCA female port (the white wire goes to the centre, the black (sheilding wire) goes to the ring)

you only need two wires so the case wires should work- check the pinout thread that Classic Leon linked to find out which pin is which for the SPDIF_IN

just remember the signal wire is the centre pin on an rca connector

i recomend, however, a CD_SPDIF cable that often comes with soundblaster cards - just cut one of the connectors off the very end (don't cut into the shielding however)
and solder/secure to the RCA connector

Do you know where I could get a bracket from? I have looked but can't see any places to get one from.

Thanks.

mine was a motherboard optical OUT module that i modded - so it may be best to build your own… all you need is a TORX module, some where to mount it, and 3 wires - power(5v), signal, ground.

Ok guys I know this is old but I left it for a while and now i've gotten hold of a motherboard bracket. How do I connect the wires up? I was reading the post in the main pinout thread and someone else with a picture of connecting a bracket to pins 1 7 and 9, so do i just change one of those to pin 5 and it will work for optical input?

Thanks guys

you actually have to have the special input optical unit, the one on the motherboard bracket is most likely and output one.
standard coax (RCA) s/pdif would work both ways however
