Connect Hoontech DB3 to Audigy 2

Ok, I followed exactly the pinouts for Audigy 1 and Audigy 2 and connected my Hoontech DB3 to my Audigy 2. Nothing works.

I am mainly concerned with the optical SPDIF-in. I did the 25-35 jumper, and still no sound from the spdif-in with and without dolby digital. Any ideas why?

could you explain EXACTLY what pins you had connected (DB III <---> AD_EXT)... You are not using kX, right? In creative's driver, do you have 'Audigy2 Drive' option enabled? (like spdif in/out, aux2, etc.)

Yes, I am using normal ZS creative drives, and not kX. I don't think the Live Drive is active in my drivers. But I DO have a tab in Audio HQ with DTS/DOLBY decode spdif-in.

Ok here are the pin connections.
Audigy 2 Audigy 1 / Hoontech DB3
1-1
3-3
38-38
(I only used 2 GND's since from Hoontech's board only 3 and 38 pins seems to be used (i think))
37-25
39-27
9-17
29-19
31-22
27-9
5-15 (tried 6 as well)
13-4
19-33
21-31
35-23
33-24
25-13
23-10
24-11

and the 25-35 bridge on the Audigy 2

Seems you made too much connections, and these would make anybody more than confused...

Since Hoontech is only SPDIF 1 input / 3 outputs bracket you'll need to connect only:
+5V, few GNDs, SPDIF0 IN, 3x SPDIF OUT...

Let's make this simple; first connect only 25<--->35 bridge on Audigy2 only. Now turn on your comp & see if you have additional inputs enabled (i don't remember where in driver you'll find this, since i'm not using creative's drivers anymore, maybe you should switch to kX, just temporarily - to fix this problem you have ).

Now that you are sure that driver had 'recognised' Audigy drive, connect: +5V, GNDs & SPDIF0 OUT only.

Now, when you turn your comp on, optical output on your bracket should light!

Now connect SPDIF0 IN, it should be connected to optical input. If you have optic cable you should try connecting loopback, just to test everything...
Again, i suggest that you switch to kX, it would be much easier to test SPDIF outputs / inputs...

at the end it should look like this:
Code:
         purpose:  Audigy2 pins:  Hoontech pins:

**************************************************
             +5V:         1 --------  1 or 2...
             GND:         3 --------  3
             GND:        38 -------- 38

      SPDIF0 out:         9 -------> 17
      SPDIF1 out:        29 -------> 19
      SPDIF2 out:        31 -------> 22
      SPDIF3 out:        27 ------->  9
        SPDIF in:         5 <------- 15  (or 6?)

            GPI0:        35 <--\
                               |
            GPO0:        25 ---/
One more thing; Are you sure that you are using correct Hoontech pinout? Take care when maping pins from SB Live's AUD_EXT to your Hoontech connector...

Please post what you've done so far...

good luck!

Hmm i did the exact same thing and the SPDIF-OUT does not light up.
I checked the voltage AT the spdif-out and i get 1.5v and 1.0v. I do get 5v across the power and gnd. I am not sure if this is sufficient?"

5V is sufficient for power
as for s/pdif, that should be 5V aswell for the optical connector…

[COLOR=Red]It IS sufficient![/COLOR] CHECHK AGAIN: Are you sure that you are using correct Hoontech pinout? Maybe you need to connect BOTH +5V? or maybe specific GND... Trace signals from specific pins at Hoontech connector to bracket itself... You'll be able to find out 100% where are +5V & GNDs...

My connections are exactly as I followed on the Hoontech pinouts. I just need to connect 1 GND, 1 5V+, 1 SPDIFin and 1 SPDIF-out. Whats weird is that the power from the Audigy 2 card 5V+ becomes 1.8V+ when I connect the hoontech card.

At 1.8V, the optical out does not light up. But if you connect 5V+ ext. it will light up.

With ext. power, the card still doesn't work (SPDIF-IN) doesn't respond. I have no other way to check if my optical out works.

This is VERY strange! Have you tried connecting additional +5V on your Hoontech? There are additional +5Vs on Audigy2 MIDI/joystick connector... Try connecting two +5V frrom MIDI/joy connector to BOTH +5V on your Hoontech & see what happends... I just hope you didn't fried anything so far, because 5 -> 1.8 voltage drop SHOULD NOT HAPPEND!

seems that the hoontech was trying to take too much current, and the board couldn;t hand;e?

But if it's taking too much power, how come it works good on regular Audigy / SB Live! ???

the older model cards may be providing a higher current, as there are no add-on cards for the audigy 2 series, there is no need for a high load capable 5V VCC source, not sure why its even there

Ya I dont' think I fried anything ... but I will check with my old Audigy 1, which worked.

My Audigy 2 works perfectly (I think). But I lost the "SPDIF-IN" tab in Audio HQ yesterday when I connected to an ext. 5V+ source.

I should've just bought an Audigy 2 Platinum damn.

Whatever... I wish i have Hoontech DB III myself so i could test everything on my Audigy 2...

hej, pkpkpk (whatever that suppose to mean) don't give up on this... I really suggest that you switch to kX, connect both +5Vs as i said before, and solve what's bothering you for good... Come on, man, let's make this work, and hurry before i lose all enthusiasm!

Hey Samir, I will sell you my Hoontech DBIII if you want. I reside in Canada so it will have to be international shipping.

Thank you, but i already made myself SPDIF input-output module... But if you really want to send me your DBIII, I can promise you that I'll figure out how to connect it properly to any Audigy2 card, and i'll also publish that info for anybody else interested... Of course, i'll send you back your DBIII... Maybe you can sell it to someone else, or it may become neat Christmas gift?!? Think about it...

Good luck...
