Problem installing Multimedia Audio Controller

Hey there,

I'm building a new computer and everything is going great except for one thing. I cannot install the onboard sound. It is a nForce2 mobo (ABIT NF7-M) and whenever I attempt to install the latest nForce drivers, it seems to "skip over" the audio driver. After I restart windows, I look in the device manager and the multimedia audio controller has a yellow exclamation point over it.

I attempt to reinstall the drivers for the device but it gives me an error: "There was a problem installing this hardware. An error occurred...the data is invalid."

And that is it. I've tried an number of workarounds but I cannot figure this one out. And yes, onboard sound is enabled in the BIOS. I am using Win XP Home.

Any suggestions?

then check the motherboard's documentation for what sound device is installed, and then go to the website for that manufacturer (it's most likely a realtek chip)

I actually tried that with another AC97 driver, but I tried it again with the Realtek drivers and I got the same error message.

No conflicts, but it always crashes when it tries to modify ksuser.dll....so I'm going to try and work with that information.

Well, I tried reinstalling the latest version of DirectX and uninstalling + reinstalling the nForce drivers....nope.

I am pretty damn stumped.

Problem fixed after doing a CAB clean of SP2.cab and several serious registry hacks. Thanks for the help!
