Mp3 in 5.1

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759...049TX1K0100488

I've read about this before of course, but I just thought I'd share the article with you guys. Can't wait to test my z-5300s with this new mp3

Sounds cool but won't this increase file sizes? Also, I won't pay for a codec.

you also have to have the original content in 5.1 for it to work

and yes it would most likely be at least 3 times the size of a stereo track at the same bitrate. (2 channels vs 6 channels of audio)

dj_stick: It probably won't be three times the size, since some channels (especially sub and center) can get by with lower bitrate without losing quality.

I have doubts about whether it will be worth using though, other than for compatibility. I tried converting some ac3s I demuxed directly from DVDs of mine to 5.1 oggs, and to get similar quality the file size ended up pretty much the same. The only downside is that I can't play ac3 files in Winamp.

I don't plan on paying for a codec, thats what torrents are for...because I didn't pay for 90% of the mp3s so there wouldn't be much sense in that. As for the size difference I won't mind that at all, to me it's worth it.

Yea, I was just about to say "Don't OGG's support 5.1?"

Apparantly someone beat me to it.

i was basing that assumption on CBR recordings. VBR might be different in this case.

As for listening to music in 5.1, it has to be recorded in 5.1 first… i can't see most artists recording in 5.1 in the next few years… but it's a good idea for operas, orchestras, game soundtracks aswell

Yeah, I really can't see it becoming much more popular than 5.1 ogg is currently.

Games: Easier to just record in stereo, and upmix ingame.
CDs: Only released in stereo.
SACDs: Can't be ripped.
DVD-Audio: Can't be ripped.
DVD-Video audio: Just as easy to leave in ac3 format or whatever.

as for the games comment, that's true, but upmixing ingame taxes the CPU a little, depending on the algorithm, so if they pre-upmix it before pressing the disc you don't get that wasted CPU usage… that's if game devs want surround sound in game

Hmm, when I opened up some games to test this, I realized I don't have any games that do upmixing, or use surround sound for the music, it's all just in stereo...

Pre-upmixing would take quite a lot of space though, and I don't think a simple stereo x2/x3 upmix would take much cpu power. Some games, like UT, use oggs, which result in higher cpu usage anyway, if you have the music enabled...
