so then, in order to have the best audible quality, it would be best to stick to regular mp3 unless space is an issue if i have a music library of like 1Tb .

I use Easy CD-DA for ripping, encoding, and conversation. Media Jukebox for playback.

If you want the best sound quality, one would be better off using oggs or even FLACs rather than mp3s.

That would be a huge music library... mine is just over 50Gb, mostly in 192 kbps oggs.

Oggs are like mp3s, generally they will be smaller for the same quality of sound, or sound better for the same sized file. They have numerous file structure advantages over mp3s, and are open-source and free of royalties, so some games use them, like UT.

Disadvantages include longer encoding time and higher processor usage for decoding. They also have much less support in hardware audio players.

FLACs stands for "free lossless audio codec". They are usually about half the size of the wav file. I don't usually bother with this format, if I want something lossless, I just pop the CD in. Oggs can do lossless too, but I don't bother, for the same reason.

Jeez, only a few of you said EAC!

Damn, this program gives me the best results (due to the really obsessive error-checking) out of all of the ripping programs, CDex is my second favorite because of its ability to engoce as OGG as it is ripping.

My setup is EAC with the GT3b2 Ogg codec as an external decoder. Works like a charm!

EAC is very good, but it's a dead project, no?

does it really matter if it is a dead project?
if it works, it works - no need for constant updates

Matters to me because of possible future incompatibilities with newer drives, and new copy protection techniques.
