mp3 maker?
anybody know what is a good program to make mp3s out of your original CDs? I don't like to use windows media player because after you reinstall winXP so many times and transfer the license over, you loose ALL your music. This happened to me a while back, and i don't want to re-rip all my music and not be able to listen to all of it after i install winXP a few times later
. I want to listen to my music whenever i want, and not have WMP say i can't because the license has been transfered too many times on my legit audio CDs.

Actually, Media Player 10 is able to rip to MP3 format as well as WMA... I use that to backup my CDs to MP3s - simple and it does the job
CDEx and Audiograbber are really good programs as well |

I use cdex to rip my cds to oggs, I've got a total of about 20 mp3s on my harddrives, and thousands of oggs. You can download cdex from sourceforge.

I use LAME. I just like the overall sound that you end up with.

Logla, Lame is just a codec, not the actual encoder program. I'm pretty sure that CDex uses the Lame codec, aswell as a few other freeware apps

Although to be honest, I read the initial post wrong. LAME is used to convert the WAV files which have already been ripped off the cd, into mp3. For ripping the WAVs from the HDD I use Easy CD-DA Extractor. I then use LAME to encode the wav into mp3. Its long winded but imo I end up with the best sounding mp3s that way. A lot of other things I have used just end up making the sound tinny and at worst with warbling on the treble. The Lame encoded tracks seem to have a warmer feel to them which doesn't sound too tiring. |

I like iTunes for their AAC encoder but dont touch their MP3 encoder with a 10 foot poll.
Nero does a beautiful job of MP3s but they like to do MP3pro more often...and honestly MP3pro sounds really flat. I dont get the rich tones that I do with AAC. Regular MP3 is alright though.

Logla, you probably have the original Lame codec encoders gui?
there are various MP3 codecs to encode them with, fraunhofer, lame etc. From what i have read, the lame codec produces the highest quality MP3 files. many other encoder apps also use the Lame codec

EAC + LAME here.
dj, you've never heard of lame.exe? it's an encoder, not a codec. it's a program that takes an input, runs its encoding algorithms, and writes an mp3 file. programs that use LAME, such as EAC, are not using it the same way the fraunhofer codec is used in other programs; they simply call up the lame.exe encoder and pass it the input. codecs get registered in Windows, and can be used for playback of files (eg in Windows Media Player); fraunhofer is an example. LAME is just a program, does not get registered with aud codecs, and can't be used for playing back files that way. hope that clears it up.

MP3 is just as you know it.
MP3 pro is a more compressed version. the codec in and of itself is better quality for equal compression(so theoretically 128kbps for MP3pro is about 160kbps for MP3). the thing is that the way it does this is to remove sounds that are either outside of the normal human hearing range, or to remove sounds that you wouldnt normally hear over other sounds (like if you have a really high pitched sound in a song, that would drown out certain other pitches . with this compression it just eliminates that). the problem is that, while theoretically you cannot hear those, many people notice that the music just does not sound as rich...and thats true. Plus some people have really good hearing(like myself) and can hear a much greater range than normal. Thats why I stick with AAC or lossless codecs.
