What Else Do I Need To Take Full Advantage Of The Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Sound System?

1) I have bought the new revised Logitech Z-5500 Speakers that come with the new speaker wire.

2) I have a Alienware Area-51m Laptop that comes with an onboard Audio: 5.1 channel out (SPDIF) / Line Out that uses C-Media 3D Audio Configuration Software.

Will my soundcard take full advantage of my Logitech Z-5500 and it's 5.1 Sound capability with THX, Dolby Digital Pro Logic II and DTS Digital Surround Sound? Or do I need a new PCMCIA/USB Sound Card? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

pretty sure you should be aight with juss using the SPDIF out, n lettting the lil control box do the encoding for you, now if you wanna use this to see n hear movies w/ DD or DTS im pretty sure youll need a sound card that can encode to those standards, but 4 games n general CPU stuff the prologic rox!

quik question bout the z-5500 speaker wire, i got the older model z-680's the wireing is as youd find it on any normal component set up w/ a red and white wire reciever on both ends and my Monster Cable ran between. Seen sumthing on these newer ones that looked like it had a jack/plug on the end?? is this tru? if so is it possible sumhow cange the wire to get the desired length or our ya stuk wit wat yas got with the speakers?

Mine are like these. You can swap them for higher quality cables or longer and shorter cables or whatever.

So you are saying I should be just fine with Pro Logic II for my games and music. I don't watch DVD's.

Just plug them in and try. Music will be stereo (front 2 speakers only) without prologic, if it plays out of all of them, you're fine.

For games with 5.1 sound, it should work through all speakers without any decoder functions enabled.

I think you should actually be alright using the built-in decoder for movies if you want... I've never bothered with it though, I stick with analog connections, and use either my soundcard or a separate reciever.
