EAX Advanced HD slowdowns
Anyone know how I can fix this problem?
Using the 1.03 EAX HD patch for Jedi Knight 2 and using a Soundblaster Audigy with the .283 Audigy 2 drivers I'm experiencing this problem. When using EAX Advanced HD (which means enabling OpenAL), I notice slowdowns it seems when new environmental effects are loaded...or too many sounds are being played. I've increased s_soundpoolmegs to 100 and tried to fiddle with compression for visual things, but the only fix so far is to disable EAX. Only prob is, without Advanced HD....there is no surround sound...plus Advanced HD sounds SO amazing, first sound format that lets objects react with sound (occlusion, reflection, and the like)....so it just sounds beautiful on my speakers....mmm... Anyway, anyone know any tweaks I could take advantage of? |

I think that new drivers from creative labs (rumors cough rumors) will fix it. I heard about UT2k3 that will be fixed (because it is much slower when you turn on EAX), so this will be too.

See, that's my problem...I'm using the drivers that supposedly "Enable OpenAL acceleration" and "fix EAX Advanced HD performance issues in games."
But damn, the first time I played Outcast I was like "whoa, the sabres are cool" and now it's like "whoa, hearing someone click a lightsabre on through a corner behind me is cool" hehe

OpenAl is not supported in any "normal" version of Jedi Outcast, it's only with creative's own 1.03 patch that OpenAL is activated...it can use multiple formats (such as A3D, EAX 1.0 and so on) but with the patch, it ONLY enables EAX Advanced HD.

OpenAL is the audio version of OpenGL, a 3d sound API.
If your card supports it, great, but it won't be used unless the game supports it. Jedi Outcast doesn't support it unless you use the 1.03 creative specific patch, and when it is enabled EAX 3.0 (Advanced HD) is used...unless you have a Live card, then it uses EAX 2.0. You can't force it to use 2.0 on an audigy. That help? |

Now I get it. Question 2 - If kX Team implements OpenAL (it will be surely easiear than EAX), will I be able to use EAX - in which games?

Well, there is an added file that Creative supplied with that patch called "EAXMan.dll" which lists itself as "EAX controller version 3.0.0.0" so I dunno...it's possible, considering it is an Open standard...give it a try!
I'd actually use the kX drivers if you guys figured out how to get eax working! somehow |
