Please assist, Constant popping noise in Windows and Games. :(
System Specs:
Amd 3200+ Barton Core Processor, 400 FSB 1 Gig Dual Chanelled PC3200 DDR Gigabyte 7N400 Pro Nforce 2 Chipset Mobo X800 Pro Video Card Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Edition Sound card [Slot 4] 56k US Robotics Hardware based modem (Refuse to deal with Winmodems) Western Digital 80 Gig Hard Disk Drive, 8 Meg Cache, etc etc [Os Drive] Maxtor 200 Gig 8 Meg Cache Hard drive [Video Game Drive] Standard fare CD rom and CD Writer drive. No issues with them. So here's the jist. Windows loads up, music occurrs, popping sounds in my speakers. Load up a game, Again the popping sounds. Especially prevalent when trying to run Doomsday for Heretic, Hexen, Doom etc. Games Lag. Not happy with lagging games. Try to play music while playing FFXI in Winamp, again popping and this time HELLACIOUS LAG. Play a video file in Winamp.....again...popping and the video itself lags. So...I've uninstalled the drivers, safe mode, driver cleaner, reinstall....no go. Still popping. Tried the USB adapter keyboard fix. Again, no go. Still a ton of popping. Shut off the filter in Audio HQ, again....still popping. Can someone PLEASE help me out here? This problem has me tearing my hair out. All I want to do is to play my games without the constant high pitched squeeking POPS that I hear from my speakers. It's driving me NUTS. I've done a search through this forum, I've spent HOURS trying to find a solution. Nada, Nil, Zip zilch and zero. So now I'm frustrated. If anyone has a solution to this PLEASE let me know. I've upgraded to the latest Sound Blaster drivers for my card, did driver cleaner, all the ordinary and proper stuff, and STILL the damn popping noises will NOT go away. What the heck is causing this? And just how do I fix it? Any and all help is greatley appreciated. Draconis |

I had the same problem with that card in a select few games, but I'd been gaming so infrequently that I didn't bother trying to fix it, and I don't seem to have the problem anymore... have you tried changing slots for the soundcard?

hi
i think i now how u can fix it : with my audigy 1 i´ve got the same problem. first you have to disable any onboard sound and then u need to check the irq port of our card !!! ( is there any other component which use the same irq port ?? ) in my case it was the ethernet card which used the same irq port ( nr. 17 ) and every time i made a connection to the net, there was this poppin ( knacken ). after changing the pci-slot ( and because of that the irq ) the problem was fixed try it and write if it is was helpful moroga |

Hi This can be a latency issue --> PCI latency issue. If IRQ settings didn't help, you may need to try fix it by changing PCI latencies. Download this utility (PCI Latency Tool 2.3) and check the state of your PC's PCI latencies. You'll see current lateny values for all of your devices. Latency value of VGA controller (graphics card) is #1 to look for. It should be set to 32 or 64. Many times it is set to 255 or 248 which is too much. This change may decrease your graphics performance, but not much. You can set Latencies using this tool (for experimenting too) but I would suggest that if you need to decrease/increase some of them, try first what registry/BIOS tweaks can do: - set all 'DisableProgPCILatency=' key values on registry into 1 (HEX or DEC). (defaulted to 0). - boot PC into BIOS (pressing del or what ever when it is on startup) - set PCI latency into 32 or 64 (BIOS) - boot When you BOOT #1 time after changes, your PC may freeze or start very slowly. If it does, BOOT once into safe -mode (no changes need to do). Run Latency tool again and see, if there is some useful changes got. If you need to adjust more, then use tool for it (This allows increasing your sound cards latency, if you feel its too low). Well,
After I finally got a chance to sit down and work on this, I cleaned out the drivers again and ran through everything, the card is now in the 5th slot down and away from the other cards as best as I can manage. It SEEMS to have taken care of MOST of the issue. However, Forget running any old DOS game with this sound card. It seems to hate them. So I've been forced to adapt to the Open GL versions of each one, such as JDoom, Jheretic etc (Yah I know, crying shame. :P ) Ran Doom, it seemed to do just fine. Hexen however is still giving me fits. Though NOW the popping ONLY Happens on the left speaker...and it's dimmed some now. Still have no clue what is going. Thanks for the help that everyone has given. I'll delve further into things when I get a chance. Draconis |
