Understanding Models, IDs and CTComp to install your SB Live! 5.1

The purpose of this note is to:
  1. Help SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 users understand and fix the notorious "Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audio card on your system" error.
  2. Make IDs of two more SB Live! 5.1 cards (SB0223 and SB0228) available.
  3. Call for help to find the ID of Model SB0229 and possibly other SB Live! 5.1 models.
If you're new to how to install your SB Live! 5.1 if you've lost the original CD and why you need the CTComp patch, read this guide http://www.tech-pc.co.uk/audigy-2.php first.

Contents of this note
  1. Understanding the SB0xxx Model# of your SB Live! 5.1 card
  2. SB Live! 5.1 Models + IDs after applying CTComp.exe v7.3.0 (©2004 DVDKingdom). **Update**: v7.5.0 is out now,
  3. SB Live! 5.1 Models not (yet) in CTComp.exe and how to add these manually
  4. Call for help: please supply the ID of Model SB0229
1. Understanding the SB0xxx Model of your SB Live! 5.1 card

Model numbers are one of the least understood issues of SB cards and the major cause of huge frustration and loss of time among users. Before you start troubleshooting, you must understand exactly the model of your SB.

Thanks to CL you cannot properly identify your SB Live! 5.1 card by the "Model SB0xxx" printed on the card and the Serial No sticker. E.g., the ubiquitous "Model SB0220" is non-existent when you search CL's website, because SB0220 is just a collective name. To precisely identify your card, you need the Serial No and read SB + the next four digits. The Serial No is usually on a sticker on the card's solder side.

Example: a SB Live! 5.1 card has "Model SB0220" printed on the component side and on the Serial No sticker. The Serial No is M1SB0224845022716M. This is a Model SB0224.

A list of model numbers and names of Creative Audio Products can be found here:
http://dmzweb3.europe.creative.com/wwenglish/general/Products_List_Audio.htm

2. SB Live! 5.1 Models + IDs after applying CTComp.exe v7.3.0 (©2004 DVDKingdom)

The notorious "Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audio card on your system" error message is caused by a hidden list of "allowed" SB-models and their HW IDs.

The Creative Compatibility Patch ©2004 (CTComp.exe, many thanks to DVDKingdom!) can help you fix this by adding many additional Audigy and SB Live! cards to the hidden list of allowed models (CTComp.dat).

After applying CTComp v7.3.0, the following SB Live! 5.1 cards (next to many Audigy models not mentioned below) are available:

Models: SB0060, SB0100, SB0102, SB0101, SB0103, SB0105, SB0221, SB0222

IDs: 00801061, 00801062, 00801064, 00801069, 0080106A, 0080106B, 0080106C, 00801065

If your SB0xxx is not listed above, CTComp.exe v7.3.0 cannot fix the "Setup could not detect..." error for you, but maybe your Model and ID can be fixed manually.

**Update**: v7.5.0 out now, including SB0223, SB0228 and SB0229.

3. Models/IDs not (yet) in CTComp.exe and how to add these manually

Here are two SB Live! 5.1 models currently not in CTComp v7.3.0

Model SB0228 ID: 00801066
Model SB0223 ID: 00110001

Although less convenient than with CTComp.exe, you can add ID's manually to CtComp.dat
This guide shows you how: http://www.tech-pc.co.uk/audigy-2.php

The ID of the SB0223 looks strange because it doesn't seem to fit in the range of other IDs. However, the IDs above came from a (said to be) original SB0228 Installation CD.

**Update**: v7.5.0 out now, including SB0223, SB0228 and SB0229.

4. Call for help: please supply the ID of Model SB0229

So far I've been unable to find/uncover the ID of Model SB0229, called SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 LS

Anyone knowing this ID or able to supply Data1.cab from an original Installation CD of Model SB0229, please help.

**Update**: solved (see further down this thread) thanks to SIKa!

Don't thoses model numbers use the chip that is incompatable with the Audigy 2ZS drivers ? Or is it just the 24bit models it won't work with?

Could somebody please list the models it will work with ?

If I'm wrong, it looks like I will have to remake my torrent.

Just wanted to add.... Thanks DVDKINGDOM for making this patch

Models are listed in 1st post of this thread

Hi blast, the Models (and their IDs) you asked for are listed in section 2 and 3 of the first post of this thread, which also has a link to how to use Audigy drivers and software for the SBL51.

Model SB0229 and its ID have been added tonight (thanks to SIKa).

To keep discussions in this thread clear and focused, it's intended to be about SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 cards only, all of which have an EMU10K1 Audio Processor. That is, all but model SB0200 (more exactly: Model SB0203) which is the notorious "Dell OEM" version that's said to be a stripped down version. Neither CL or Dell ever confirmed this, but be warned.

Thank you SIKa!! DVDKingdom please read this...

I've just tested the ID in SIKa's post on my SB0229 by manually editing CTComp.dat of a SB0228 installation CD... and it works!

Many thanks to SIKa on behalf of all SB0229 owners!

The "Setup could not detect..." error has disappeared and selected software is installed when I run setup from \Audio\Setup.

DVDKingdom: would you please add this Model and ID to the next release of your CTComp patch? Thank you.

One hitch left: I've just discovered that the "5.1 Speakers" option is missing from the "Speakers" applet menu, whereas it was an available option during setup. I'll dig into this and get back here a.s.a.p.

Models are listed in 1st post of this thread (Cont'd)

Hi blast (cont'd), now I understand you were looking for a full list, not just the 5.1's, of all SB models after applying DVDKingdom's CTComp patch (currently v7.4.0).

It's easy to see the list of all models, if you want both before and after the patch:
  1. Extract CTComp.dat from Data1.cab using the "manual" method.
    You'll need a tool called i6comp for that.
    Look here how-to: http://kpush.tripod.com/tweaking/id33.html
    Note: i6comp needs Data1.cab and Data1.hdr to extract, not only Data1.cab
  2. Open CTComp.dat with Notepad and scroll through it. It's easy to recognise the models and IDs (before the patch), not only 5.1's, but all.
  3. Apply DVDKingdom's CTComp patch (currently v7.4.0) to Data1.cab
  4. Extract CTComp.dat from the patched Data1.cab
  5. Open the patched CTComp.dat with Notepad and you'll see all models and IDs after the patch.
Hope this helps.

Sorry to reopen this thread, but I can't get drivers for my Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 (SB0060).

WindowsXP detects the card because it installs its own drivers...something like CreativePCI.....
So I removed those drivers, ran a DriverCleaner program, then restarted.

Then, I downloaded the new set of drivers from the creative site and extracted it.

I downloaded the newest version of ctcomp.exe (7.6.1) and it says it patches for SB0060. I even extracted the ctcomp.dat from the data1.cab and it has the ID #s that were posted above.

So i went into my Audio\Setup directory and ran setup.exe and I still get this message...
"setup could not detect any sound blaster audio card on your system"
I don't know whats going on.

SB0226 Help

firstly, thank for this most informative post! i have been struggling with digital output VIA SPDIF for many months using my OEM SB Live Value card.

currently, i have the following problem: whenever i tried to install the above drivers (using the DVDKingdom patch), i am able to reboot, and then a few moments after windows starts up, i get the blue screen of death.

please help me! i once got this working, but my HDD crashed since.

the sound works now- although not dolby digital (i can see on the reciever when it is passing as digital), but again, i cant upgrade the drivers using the above link.

is there a way to remove all references to my old (incorrect SB drivers)? i hve tried so many over the months.

my config:
Windows Media Center Edition 2005 - sp2
sound blaster live value digital (SB0226)
NVDVD codec (latest version)
Fuji 1650 mb
pentium 4 3.2
1 gig ram

thanks again for your expert help

Can this ID number be found from somewhere (like printed on the card/on a sticker)?

One Audigy 2 (SN: msb024024018xxxx, NR:401MN317C) card has a PNP Device ID as PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0004&subsys_10001102&REV04\4&136991&0&3848.

What would be the ID to store into the ctcomp.dat, to get the drivers installed --
(I assume "02100000")?
As for an example, I have a card lying here, a SB0244 --> SUBSYS_=10071102 --> Hardware Map ID = 02100007.

Here is a listing from ctcomp.dat (drivers v. 1.84.55)

;For Audigy 2 (NON-ZS) Series
;SB0240/SB0250, SB0243, SB0242, SB0244/SB0250/SB0280/SB0290, SB0245, SB0244, SB0320/SB0290, SB0249
[Hardware.Map2]
ID = 02100002, 02100003, 02100004, 02100005, 02100006, 02100007, 02100008, 02100009
ProductName = Sound Blaster Audigy 2
ProductVersion = 5.0
DefAppPath = \Creative\SBAudigy2
CardFamily = 4
SpeakerPref = 23128, 23129, 23105, 23130, 23106
FeatureSet = FeatureSet1
Readme = Readme_a.txt
Manual = Manual1
DigitalOutput = NO

Re: Using the CTComp.exe patch util to setup your SB Live! 5.1

Sorry for writing in such an old thread, but there's no way to figure out ID without having data1.cab and ctcomp.dat from it?

I'm asking because I have SB0203 and there's no ctcomp.dat in official Dell drivers and jiiteepee didn't get an answer.
