Audigy 2 to audigy 4 upgrade

Im considering at some time this year the possibility of the upgrade from a Audigy 2 to a audigy 4.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade? bear in mind i have logitechs 5300 5.1 speakers and have no intention of upgrading these speakers.

just want a few opinions from the peeps who will know more about it.

It depends which Audigy 2 do you have now? Value? Plat? eX?

creative labs auto update shows 'Sound Blaster Audigy 2, DR release 1.84.11'.

i have forgotten & no longer have the box when i purchased this card,but it is around 2 years old now. i think it's a standard A2 from creative.

The only thing that Audigy 4 is good for is to throw it into the garbage can. I mean seriously speaking it's the same thing as the ZS but with external drive and a tiny bit better SNR. The difference between 108 and 113dB is unnoticible even if you have "Golden Ears." I think you should stick to your audigy and wait to a bigger upgrade, the X-Fi. Audigy 2/ZS/4 Pro are all based off the same Audigy 2 EMU unit, so sound quality with the latest A4 YouP drivers is the same for all the cards. Features like S/PDIF out and DTS decoding are only good in you have some bad ass speakers and you wanna watch DVD's. But if you are all about playing games, then Auidgy 2 will satisfy all your needs. There is almost no difference between the cards in sound quality but there is sure a HUGE difference in price. Don't waste your money on useless Audigy 4, instead save up 100$ more and get the upcoming X-Fi.

P.S. By the way, your speakers are good enough so this "cool 7.1" sound will be useless with Audigy 4.

no its not worth the upgrade!.. just stay with your audigy 2 until creative releases its new cards that are based on xFI

Just the advice i were after.One good explanation you and swatx gave me.....looks more like im sticking to what i have now....

I don't think the first launch of X-FI is no worth to buy. I guess the price would be higher than 350 USD. and you cann't find any source to play. Now we have Audigy2/Audigy4 but there're a few games that support EAX4 and 96KHz/24 Bit and are not my favourate games. For DVD-AUDIO, I find lota symphonies in China and there are not too many pop music discs, so it's rarely used. You may update sound drivers to turn A2 to A4 to enable the latest Creative apps and functions.

Yeah, I definately agree with leon. When X-Fi first comes out it won't be worth buying because simply there won't be enough games/software that supports this new technology. And since it will be "the best", it will cost you some big bucks for something you can't use for a while. Just wait a year or two till X-Fi spreads and until their new card will come with Dolby Digital Encoding
