PLaying ac3 files in Creative media source player

I have Audigy 2 Dell OEM. 5.1 speker set.

I recently installed Creative mediasource v 3.30.21 (from Creative site). Trying to play an ac3 file that was in the Audigy 2 media folder with the mediasource player, no sound (works fine with all other sound formats).

Same with ac3 files downloaded from, for example, http://www.lynnemusic.com/surround.html

AC3Src.ax is installed in C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files. Its properties say that it is the Creative AC3 Source Filter, v 3.0.2.0

I tried installing AC3Filter ver 0.70b from http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ but it made no difference (I don't know much about codecs and filters :-))

Opening the ac3 files in WMP 10, a message popped up, to the effect that WMP did not recognise the file type, do I want it to try anyway? clicked yes and they play fine in WMP10. I've therefore set ac3 files to open in WMP10 and double clicking on them, WMP10 opens and plays them without popups or other problems.

So I can use WMP10, but just curious as to why the mediasource player won't play them. Any advice would be appreciated.

IIRC if you are using a digital connection, playing ac3 files disables this

Could you please elaborate for an audio newb?
In speaker settings I do not have use digital output only checked and in mediasource player organiser, Tools, settings, playback tab, I tried both 'use system default' and 'digital playback (recommended)' without success with either setting.
Are there some other settings I should try?
The files I'm trying to play are on my hard drive, not from an external source.
